This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

100 Years Ago- 1926
Lombard College’s freshmen class was arriving. The students were registering for their classes. The fraternities and sororities were planning their open houses.
75 Years Ago- 1951
The Huddle Drive-In was encouraging people to eat in the “comfort of your car.” You could get 1/2 chicken for $1.10. Service was from 7am to 2am.
The Biller Brothers Circus was coming to the East Main Circus Grounds. This three ring circus claimed to be the largest in America. It included elephants, 20 clowns, Arabian horses, jugglers and more.
50 Years Ago- 1976
Belscot located off Fremont St was having a sale that included men’s denim blue jeans for $5.
30 Years Ago- 1996
Streaks football lost to #10 ranked Sterling 24-0. It was actually closer than the score indicated, it was 6-0 at half-time. Sterling scored to start the second half, then Galesburg fumbled and it resulted in a quick score. Coach Mike Hoskins after the loss said Galesburg was really 2-3, he was counting the freshmen, sophomores, and varsity’s combined records.
20 Years Ago- 2006
The University of Illinois was in process of dropping Chief Illiniwek. In Street Talk, locals were asked their thoughts. Susan Vinson said, “My father’s 72 and he’ll fall over if they do.” All five people were opposed to dropping the Chief.
10 Years Ago- 2016
27 teams (54 men) were entered in the Best Ball Tourney, including Jason and Jared Hallam, the defending champs. Because of work on the greens at Soangetaha, the players were to play 1 thru 14 then repeat 1 thru 4 a second time.
