1988 Streaks Baseball- State Champions- “The Record Speaks for Itself”

While Galesburg HS had a rich tradition in athletics, going into the 1987-8 school year only three Silver Streaks had ever won an IHSA Team State Championship. The 1913 boys basketball team, 1963 boys golf, and 1972 boys golf teams were GHS’s only 3 State Champs. The 1988 Streaks boys baseball team became the 4th Illinois State Champs.

Coaches’ Corner- Iverson Curl

Most teams run an Iverson action for one of their best players, just to get them the ball on a wing with their defender maybe out of position so they can have open shot or a good angle to drive baseline. To prevent this, teams will work hard to get the defender to follow right behind the guard on their cut. This is an easy counter for the cutter.

Coaches’ Corner- Foul Up Three or Play It Out? What analytics say.

A team is up three late in the game. The question is whether you foul or play it out.

If you are watching on TV, the universal answer is- “They have to do what they practice.”

What should a team practice?

Players Playbook- Working to Be a Good Three Point Shooter

When I was coaching, it was not unusual for a player to launch threes in a game that might not even hit the rim. They might be shooting only 15% from three in games but thought they should be able to keep launching up the threes.

HOF Insights- Keeping the “Linemen” & Their Parents Happy

In football, not everyone gets to be the quarterback or the star running back. Someone has to be up front blocking. In volleyball, not everyone gets set up to hit the ball and not everyone gets to be the setter. In basketball, not everyone gets 20 shots per game or gets to shoot threes.

Every sport has positions and jobs that are crucial to the team’s success but they are not positions that grab glory and attention. It is easy for the “linemen” in a sport to feel unappreciated.

As a coach, how did you try to make the “linemen” of your sport feel appreciated and important.

I have put together a collection of some of the pictures from the 1960 GHS Reflector. I have focused on pictures associated with the “new school,” as well as pictures of the extensive number of activities and classes available to GHS students in 1960.

I am sure as you look at these pictures, they may bring back memories of the 1960’s and 1970’s at GHS, and it also may produce questions. Here are some questions and comments I have after looking at the pictures…

I would love for you to share if you have some answers to my questions, and share your own comments and questions.

Brenna Saline was an All-State HS player at Galesburg then a successful college player. In 2011, I asked her to share what motivated her as a player.

Here are the Brenna’s secrets to success…

Coaches’ Corner- Using Social Media to Shine Light on Your Team

As coaches part of our job is to promote our team and our players. We need to do what we can to shine some light on our team.

Todd Olinger- Officiating the State Championship Game

There is a shortage of referees throughout America. The shortage is so great that it is endangering the continuation of high school sports as we know them. There are many reasons for the shortage of officials, ranging from fans’ abuse to long hours to easier ways to make extra money.

GHS grad, Todd Olinger has served as a sports official for 35 years, doing a variety of sports. This past March, Todd was rewarded for his service and ability by being assigned by the IHSA to work on of the State Championship games. This assignment is the top honor that a basketball official can receive.
