This Week in Galesburg History (July 6, 2026)

“This Week in Galesburg History,” brought a new Knox coach, a traitor, a Silver Streak pioneer, and protestors on Henderson St.

This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

“This Week in Galesburg History” appears every Monday morning on the WGIL website and  Massey Basketball Blog.

Knox Coaching Legend is Hired

Dean Trevor was hired as a P.E. Teacher and coach at Knox College. Trevor had just graduated from Knox in 1926.

During his career at Knox College, he coached football, basketball, tennis, golf, and track at different times. He was named Athletic Director at Knox at the age of 28 in 1932.

In total, Dean Trevor was a student, athlete, coach, and athletic director at Knox College for 46 years. In honor of his service and leadership to Knox, the football field at the time was named Dean Trevor Field. That field is just west of the Memorial Gym, where Knox today competes in track.

Musial & Cards vs Sauer & Cubs

It was a slow week in Galesburg if a White Sox fan would post an article on a Cardinals vs Cubs game. But I am really for two teams- the White Sox and whoever the Cubs are playing!

In this game, the Cards behind players like Red Schoenienst, Stan Musial, and Enos Slaughter defeated the Cubs. The Cubs stars were Hank Sauer and Phil Cavarratta.

Some unusual things in the game- The Cards scored 10 runs and no one hit a home run, that would be unusual today. And the Cardinal pitcher pitched a complete game- when is the last one of those you saw.

The 1951 season finished with the Cards in third place at 81-73, and the Cubs in last with 62-92 record. This was an era when MLB played a 154 game schedule.

In 1951 the Yankees defeated the Giants in the World Series. The Giants made it to the WS by beating the Dodgers in a three game playoff. This was the series when Bobby Thompson of the Giants hit the famous “Shot Heard Around the World.”

Pioneer in Galesburg Girls Sports- Sandi Owen

The leader in the All-City for girls 15-17 was Sandi Owen. She was in the GHS class of ‘77.

In the Fall of 1975 (1975-6 school year), Sandi had led the Streaks girls golf team to a 3rd in State finish. This was the first State finish by a girls athletic team at Galesburg HS.

In the Fall of 1976 (1976-7) school year), Sandi Owen finished 8th at State, and the Streaks girls golf team again finished 3rd in State.

Despite finishing in the top 3 in back to back years, and being the first girls sports teams to place at State, neither team is in the GHS Athletic HOF.

The anger surrounding the killings of young Black Americans, lead to the “Black Lives Matter” movement. The national emotions were felt in Galesburg, where hundreds marched down Henderson Street as a sign of their outrage for the national events.
