Sept. 4, 1930- Dedication of the $46,000 Lake Storey Pavilion

Lake Storey Pavilion Today

On September 4, 1930 the city of Galesburg had ceremonies to dedicate the new Lake Storey Pavilion.

The Aitichson, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad had made their 700,000,000 gallon water storage reservoir available for use to the City of Galesburg. According to the local newspaper, Mayor Mack had pushed for the development of the area for recreation. Mack was tabbed as the “father of Lake Storey.”

The citizens of Galesburg had passed a $150,000 bond to be used for the Lake Storey development. To put it in perspective, the $150k bond in 1930 would be the equivalent of $2.9 million in today’s dollar. The cost of the Pavilion was $46,000, which would be the equivalent of $900,000 in today’s dollar.

The dedication included speeches by Col. B.M. Chiperfield, a prominent Canton lawyer, and H.S. Machen, a representative of the Santa Fe RR. In addition, local politicians spoke as well as mayors from surrounding communities.

After the dedication, there was to be a dance on the “new pavilion floor.”

Congratulations to the people of Galesburg in the 1930’s to have the vision to build the Lake Storey Pavilion, and congratulations to the people of Galesburg for refurbishing it in the 2000’s to make it still a valuable local building.
