Strategy- Side Ball Screen w/ Hammer Action

As I have previously posted, everyone in America seems to run some form of a European side ball screen offense. Earlier I discussed importance of working on the execution of the ball screen phase of the offense- don’t just go thru the motions. This series is emphasizing the high-low action and the opportunity for hammer action.

Initial Side Ball Screen-
This action is especially effective vs teams who want to either trap or hard hedge on the ball screen.  To get into this series, you want to eliminate the backdoor cut so you are taking the ball to a side where they will be two offensive players. It will work better if the offensive player gets a little higher than usual. #5 times it to pop out just as #1 comes off the ball screen. #4 makes a quick roll, and #1 wants to pass ahead as soon as the screen defender commits.

#1 is not looking for the drive or looking for the pass to #4 rolling. #1 must get the screener’s defender to commit and then wants to make a quick pass to #5.

High Low Read-
#5 wants to read whether to pass to #4 rolling into the middle of the lane or to skip to #2 in the corner. In most defenses, #2’s defender will be the tag person.

Hammer Action-
If #2 doesn’t have shot or pass to #4 pinning defender, they want to make a hard drive to the baseline.

And One Pass-
If #3 is not open, #1 should be open on the “and one pass.”

Continuity-
If #1 has nothing, then the action can be repeated with #5 becoming the side ball screener, and #4 the reverse person.

High Low Read-
You have the same high low read on the other side.
