Games that I have watched on TV and in person, it seems like creating situations to get ball handler headed down hill is so important. So many actions I see are side to side vs headed down hill. I have put together a simple high ball screen designed to create some down hill opportunities or a high low option, and then a flat ball screen that creates a lot of space for the guard and a good pop opportunity for a skilled post player.
High Ball Screen-
1- Point guard could turn the corner and attack the basket.
2- If corner helps, they can kick and get q three.
3- If they defend well, they have the post rolling.
High Low Option
Weakside post raises to take away help on the point guard or the rolling post. If they defend the roll, you should have the high low.
Refuse the Screen
This is the best option. If you have a quick guard, move the screen out higher. This can be run going to the right or to the left. I liked to run it to the left so the point guard started left and came back to their right hand. In this diagram, they are attacking the lane. They have the layup, dump to the post rotating to weakside, or the kick to the corner. You MUST use this action.
Flat Ball Screen- Another version of getting downhill involves setting a flat ball screen at the top. The point guard needs to be taught how to use the flat screen.
Post Pop- It can provide great opportunities for a post who can either pop and shoot or also roll off the action.
