Basketball Trainers Advice

This week I had an opportunity to listen to Drew Hanlen speak in a virtual basketball clinic. Hanlen is the CEO of “Pure Sweat”, which focuses on helping train basketball players around the world. Hanlen is considered the #1 basketball trainer in America. He has trained and is men and women ranging from high school thru the pros. He has numerous NBA players who hire him to work with them in the off-season. Here are some thoughts picked up in his presentation:

WHAT MUST A GUARD BE ABLE TO DO
·      Shoot
o   Off the pass without a dribble
o   Off the dribble.
o   Three point range.
·      Finish
o   Getting to basket doesn’t cut it.
o   When get to basket, be able to score.
o   Head up, chest up
·      Decision Making
o   Ability to make the right pass at the right time.
o   Be able to read the defense when drive.
o   Be able to read the defense coming off a ball screen.
o   Are turnovers the result of a skill problem or a decision problem?
·      Handle Pressure and Physicalness
o   Guards need a physical toughness.
o   Go thru contact, not around it.
o   At basket don’t avoid contact, lean into it.
o   Realize not all contact is a foul- don’t whine.
·      Defensively Be Able to Keep Person Out of Lane

WHAT MUST A POST BE ABLE TO DO
·      Go to move in low post
o   Have one move that is go to move.
o   Have 2-3 counters if defense takes it away.
·      Be effective screener
o   Be physical
o   Set at correct angles.
·      Physically own the lane on defense
o   Don’t allow free movement
o   Be rebounder
·      Comfortable with the ball
o   Can pass effectively
·      Develop shooting range

END OF SEASON ANALYSIS
·      Your Strengths
o   List what worked for you this season.
·      Your Weaknesses
o   List what you were not able to do as well as you would like or should.
·      Your Opportunity
o   What skill or area do you have some most opportunity to improve and change who you are as a player?
o   If you improved your ball handling, you could be able to play both a 4/5.
o   If you improved your shooting, you could play bigger minutes.
o   If you improved ball handling, you might be able to play multiple positions.
·      What Threatens You
o   What part of your game, if not improved will threaten your minutes played or your ability to play at crunch time?
o   Shooting problems effecting ability to play vs. zones.
o   FT shooting effects ability to play at end of games.
o   Lack of physicalness effects ability to play vs physical teams.

DEVELOPING OFF-SEASON PLAN
·      Looking at what a guard or a post should be able to do, go thru the checklist above- Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity, Threats.
·      Make a list of things to work on.
·      Pick out three things to work on.
o   Plan to work on those skills twice per week.
·      Pick out one thing that is your primary focus.
o   Plan to work on it every workout.

HIGH SCHOOL WORKOUT PLAN
According to Hanlen, a high school player who has high goals should be working out 10 times per week for about 90 minutes. That is working out- not playing games. His recommended schedule:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday- workout twice per day
Wednesday, Saturday- workout once per day
Sunday- no workout
Obviously a player could adjust this to meet their schedules.

MORE IS NOT BETTER
Sometimes players feel in low post or on the perimeter they need to develop 7-8 moves to beat the defense. Hanlen believes in developing a go to move with 2-3 counters to that move based on what the defense does. He uses the example of James Harden. Harden’s go to move is between the legs then crossover. He does this to get the defense to react. Then based on his read of the defense- he has 3-4 counters.

SHOOTING
·      Base
o   It all starts with your feet.
o   Common error is for right handers to put right foot out too far.
o   Your feet should land 2-4 inches in front of where you jumped.
·      Game Speed
o   Do you have a set shot where you leave the ground 2-3 inches, or do you have a jump shot where you are getting up 6 inches or more?
o   Your shooting in practices and workouts must be game like. If you practice shooting slow with no explosion- that will not prepare you for a game.
·      Shoulders Over The Knees
o   This will give you more shooting range.
o   If shoulders back- range will always be limited.
·      More Twist- More Misses
o   If you rotate when you shoot, your accuracy will be limited.
·      Ball in Shooting Line
o   If ball is moving around and then brought into shooting line, that is a problem.
·      High Finish
o   Finish with elbow above the line of the eye.
·      No Pauses in Shot
o   Once you start shot, there should be no hitches.
