Coach Demott- The Streaks Are Proud of You

From Coach Massey

As a coach, you always hope your players will connect with each other, and feel being part of the team is special. Over the last month, I have NEVER been so proud of the Streaks players. I have gotten dozens and dozens of texts from former Streaks, some from players from the 1980's and 1990's. I have been stopped by former players in the grocery store, and at school been questioned by present Streaks players. All of them wanting to know- "What is going on? Are they going to hire Lexi?" The reason that I have been so proud is that it is clear to me that the questions and the concerns were because they viewed Lexi as their teammate. They may have played in 1996 or they may have played in 2024, it didn't matter, all of them felt connected. You sent me a message- you are all teammates. Being a Streak meant something to you, and it has become clear to me over the last month that you wanted one of your teammates to be in charge of the program.

Former players, you can be sure you have not heard the last from me. From time to time, expect me to be calling you out when it is time for you to step up to support the program and to support your teammate- Coach Demott.

From Sara Wood (1996)
Congratulations Lexi on being named Head Coach of the Galesburg Silver Streaks Girls Basketball Program. I cannot think of a better person to take the reins and continue leading this historic program. Your hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, and you have demonstrated the ability to not only lead but also inspire. Having once been in the position of the players that you coach has given you a different perspective that will be invaluable on this coaching journey. Know that you have the support of former players and coaches, and we are here if you need anything!

PLAY HARD, PLAY TOGETHER, SILVER STREAKS!

From Andie (Leibach) Allison (2004)
Lexi was one of the hardest working players I had the pleasure to work with. It was no accident that she became such a phenomenal shooter. It took hours and hours of shooting outside of practice and games to develop her three point shot. Because of Lexi's dedication to our team and our program, she gave us the great outside shooting we needed to be so successful during her four years as a member of the varsity basketball team. Lexi set the tone when it came to individual improvement and I have no doubt that she will carry this work ethic over to her new role as head coach. Lexi knows what it takes to improve individually and can pass that knowledge along to countless other competitive young women.

Lexi was always a "team first" type of athlete. Her commitment to her teammates was never doubted as a player, and this will be no different in her role as head coach. Lexi is passionate, she is competitive, and she understands the pride associated with the Silver Streaks. This combination, along with her experience she has gained as an assistant coach, makes her an ideal fit as a head coach. Galesburg's historic women's basketball program is in wonderful hands!

And Lexi, CONGRATULATIONS on this huge honor! I couldn't be happier for you as you transition into the head coach of the Silver Streaks. Know that you have the support of many. I look forward to watching the team compete next winter!

I had the privilege of playing alongside Lex my senior year, her freshman year. She was one of two freshman that played up with us that year. I am certain there wasn’t a single person on our roster that once questioned Coach Massey's decision on bringing her up. She simply worked too hard for that to happen.

If there is one thing I remember about playing alongside Lexi, which is what also gives me confidence that she will be an outstanding head coach, is her work ethic. From our first summer league together and throughout her entire freshman season/my senior season, she got after it. Summer league, preseason workouts, practices, in season games, shooting on the gun after practices, she just worked hard. She earned all the playing time she got, and as a freshman on the varsity team, she saw a good amount of it. Not because it was given to her, but because she worked for it.

And Lexi- It was so fun playing alongside you your first season with the Streaks. You’re hardworking, humble, and a true energy giver! It will be even more fun seeing you transition into this new role as the varsity girls head coach. You are so deserving, and have worked under the best example possible. I know you will do great things! I am rooting for you, and praying for you & all of the girls whose lives you will touch in so many ways for many seasons to come. Congratulations! This is big time!

From Maddie Ross (2105)
It was my 8th grade year in junior high when I first crossed paths with Lexi. She was a year younger than me but we played the same sports so our paths crossed a lot from summer camps, to bus rides and practices. Even though she was younger than me, Lexi was always ahead of her time in my opinion. When we got to high school she was moved up to varsity as a freshman, (well deserved) and I was happy for her. Lexi and I attended Lombard together, so for someone from Lombard to be pulled up as a freshman it was just as exciting for us as it was for her.
When I think about Lexi and the role she played in my four years playing basketball under Massey, I think of perseverance, kindness & hard work. Lexi was always in the gym before practice, after practice, on the weekends. She was always in the gym shooting on the gun. She made me wanna step my game. I could go on and on about the type of person/ player Lexi was, but I think her work ethic speaks for itself.

Lexi will be a great fit for head coach for the girls basketball team because she knows the game, she cares about wanting everyone to succeed, she is very inclusive, and overall her work ethic makes you wanna go harder. I remember when I got moved up to varsity,  Lexi already had two years of experience on how practice, travel to games, pre game routines & study film. She showed me the ropes, and she definitely didn’t have to. Never once did she make it feel like a hassle if I had to ask a question more than once. She was the teammate and player every team/ coach would want. I know she will take this role and thrive. She would take the team under her wings and show them the ropes, just like she  did with me and countless others!

Lexi loves the game,  I have never thought of Lexi and not thought basketball. She is very hardworking, very determined and extremely kind! She will be a phenomenal head coach, and I wish her nothing but the best! Oh and Lexi, thank you so much for all the car rides you gave me even after long travel days & practices, thank you.

From Casey Williams (2015)

"Lexi and I played together for 3 seasons as a Silver Streak so I got to know her very well. If you know Lexi as a person she is a very reserved and a sweet person. Yet, she is a very competitive and passionate person when it comes to basketball. Lexi came in as a shy freshman who could really shoot the ball. When she was asked to join us on the varsity team as a freshman she was forced to gain confidence quickly and by senior year she was everything the program needed. Good shooters let it fly and that is what Lexi did! I think she has a really good feel and IQ for what needs to get done at the high school level. As a shooter, you need those plays to get yourself open for some shots and at this point in her career I know she knows exactly what play to draw up. When something means something to you, you have an extra level of effect on you as a person. Lexi loved being a Galesburg Silver Streak so I know she will give it her everything to make sure every girl who walks through the program under her has the best experience.

Congratulations Lexi! Lead with strength, confidence, and passion and I know you will be great!"

From Saige Milroy (2017)
Lexi was one of my all time favorite teammates and I couldn’t have picked a better person to look up to while playing with her. She was only a class above me but I viewed her as my basketball “big sister”. She constantly works hard at everything she does and always pushes herself and others to be better at what they do. And no matter what, she always stayed positive regardless of any outcomes from games. Lexi has a very admirable attitude and work ethic. To know Lexi is to love Lexi!

From personal experience with Lexi, she will be a good head coach for a numerous amount of reasons but I believe the biggest is because she always sees the best potential in others. She constantly made sure I was in the gym with her getting our hundreds of shots in a week during the seasons/off-seasons and always made sure my head was on straight if I were to have any bad games/practices. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would have been as successful as I was playing for GHS. Lexi embodies the qualities of a strong leader, motivator, and strategist, which makes her the perfect person as head coach.

And Lexi- To my sweet friend Lex, I am so so SO unbelievably proud of you! I know you will do so well as head coach of a program that helped raise the both of us growing up. From being the slowest players of the YMCA team together, to being the slowest players of the GHS team together, I honestly couldn’t picture anyone else being the face of GHS girls basketball after Coach Massey! Keep inspiring others on and off the court! I can’t wait to watch you and your future teams succeed!!

From Kaylee Miller (2020)
I admire how Lexi has always stayed true to the program– she knows what it means to be a Streak, as she has set a living example through her time as a player and coach. I admire Lexi because she is an attentive coach who cares about the players.

I know she will be a good head coach because she is organized, responsible, professional, and much more. More importantly, she cares about the team and the players. She works to make players feel seen and heard, while developing close relationships with them. Players feel they can go to Lexi for whatever they may need as she is approachable and kind.

And Lexi– You have so many people in your corner. So many people are not only happy for you, but are so proud of you. Time flies and it shows, as I can remember watching you as a high school player, or even shooting off the gun in the summers. I remember thinking, “Wow, she makes them all!” If you ever feel nervous, just know that you would not be in this position if you could not handle it. You will do great things, (as you always have.)

I admire Coach Demott’s dedication, knowledge, and ability to motivate the team. She always goes the extra mile to support and help develop players.  I believe she'll make a great head coach because of leadership skills and passion for the sport. She knows the team dynamics and has a strong connection with many of the players. I think she'll bring a fresh perspective and continue to inspire the team to achieve greatness.

From Alexis Edgerson (2024)
From a young age Coach Demott was one of the players I looked up to. As a kid going to the camps she was always very nice and I could tell she was a great leader on her team. That trait didn’t leave when she became a coach. She always wanted the best for the team and did all she could to make it happen. For example, all the times in the summer when I would come in and she would spend her free time sitting in the gym with me. She was also always there for advice when my shot was off and gave me the confidence I needed. I am so happy for her and know future players will love her as much as we all did!
