Streaks over Quincy

From the Register-Mail and Matt Wheaton....

GALESBURG — The Galesburg High School girls basketball team cruised to a 70-31 victory over Quincy on Thursday night in Western Big 6 Conference action at John Thiel Gymnasium.
The Silver Streaks (15-11, 3-4) were never challenged by the Blue Devils (0-16, 0-7) in the contest.
“An unusual situation. Quincy is obviously down,” said Galesburg coach Evan Massey, who is now three wins away from the 800th of his career.
“I thought we fouled a little too much but that’s being picky. We were aggressive defensively — got a lot of steals. I thought we did a nice job moving the ball against the zone, so we got open shots inside.”

John Wooden- New Book by Seth Davis

From Indy Star....

The coach is portrayed as distant from players, resented by colleagues, loathed by referees and permissive about cheating.
The coach, John Wooden, also happens to be the most revered figure in college basketball and perhaps all of sports. So how do you separate man from myth?
Seth Davis, a Sports Illustrated writer and CBS analyst, took on that task in his recently released book "Wooden: A Coach's Life." The book debuted in 20th place on The New York Times bestseller list in hardcover nonfiction.
Davis chronicled Wooden's journey from humble Martinsville, Ind., roots to the pinnacle of his sport as the coach who guided UCLA to 10 NCAA championships in 12 years. The author spent four years on the project, building on others' research. There are 65 pages of notes from books, newspaper and magazine stories and interview transcripts.
But Davis said he found much of what was written to be superficial. He expanded on it by interviewing about 200 people, including three sessions with Wooden himself. Wooden died in 2010 at age 99.
It was "a deep dig," as Davis put it. "I didn't want to leave any stone unturned."
There were incidents under those rocks that conflict with the image of the Wizard of Westwood – a nickname Wooden detested. Davis said he didn't set out to tear down Wooden but to paint a complete portrait.
The author said he hasn't received any phone calls or e-mails from Wooden's family complaining about the biography.
"He was not a perfect man. He didn't live a perfect life," Davis said. "But he was an extraordinary man. He lived an extraordinary life."

Streaks Over Alleman

Streaks beat Alleman at Alleman.

From the Argus....

ROCK ISLAND — With one shot — and it was one her coach really didn't want her to take — Casey Williams corralled the tag of the unlikely hero for Galesburg in the Silver Streaks' 53-49 Western Big 6 Conference girls' basketball win over the Alleman Pioneers on Thursday night at Don Morris Gym.

Up until she drained a 3-point shot with 1:30 left in the game that gave the Streaks a critical four-point lead at 51-47, Williams, a 5-foot-8 junior, had totaled zero points and had taken three shots, two of those behind the arc.

"At that point of the game (clinging to a one-point lead), that's not the shot we wanted; we are more of an inside-oriented team, and we wanted the ball inside," said Galesburg coach Evan Massey. "That was not the design, but we'll take it.

"But, I think the way she plays, Casey deserves a little bit of latitude."

Williams, who averages 5.3 points per game, was wide open for the shot.

Bo Ryan- Basics

Great article from ESPN on Bo Ryan and his success....

MADISON, Wis. -- Bo Ryan's spacious office doubles as a museum for Wisconsin basketball junkies.
Glistening framed photos of notable Badgers line the walls. A vintage image of a Wisconsin player -- his legs covered in thick knee braces -- painted onto the post of an old crate basket is positioned near his mahogany desk.
And then there's the real prize for the coach who leads the unblemished, third-ranked Wisconsin squad (16-0) that will face Indiana in Bloomington on Tuesday night on ESPN.
Beneath a lamp, a collection of pictures featuring Ryan with his grandkids -- the children who've triggered a softness that has surprised his adult children -- shines as bright as the place they've occupied in his life.
A whistle swings from that light -- basketball is the fabric of the Ryan family, of course -- but it's an afterthought compared with the photos of the 66-year-old with the wide smile next to those vibrant kids.
Those boys and girls grabbed "BeePa's" heart the day they were born, and they've never let go.
That's why he frequently schedules time to finish crossword puzzles with 5-year-old Aoife. And that's why the man known for his gruff demeanor doesn't fuss when his other grandkids run onto the court in the middle of team drills.
Maybe he's different now.
Ryan's family has always been his priority. But those around him wonder whether losing his father, William "Butch" Ryan, in August changed him, perhaps made him value everything a bit more than he did before Butch died.
As he settles into his office the night before a major Big Ten matchup against Iowa, Bo Ryan mentions his dad without prompting.
He'd love to bring his father to Arlington, Texas, in April. Butch and Bo were always a popular duo at the Final Four.
He'd love to tell his father about this group of young men who might constitute his most capable and solidified Badgers team.
He'd love to call his father and talk hoops, just one more time.
He wishes Butch Ryan could see this.

Fulton High School

My brother sent this picture from the gym at Fulton High School, in Fulton Illinois. The banner at the ceiling is honoring my father's selection to the IBCA Basketball Hall of Fame. He coached in Fulton in the 1920's and '30's before moving to coach in Savanna in the '40's and '50's. It really appreciated that Fulton has chosen to recognize my father and to honor his memory!!

Argus Spin on Rocky's Win

The following was written in the Argus by Marc Nessler about our game vs. Rocky. Most of the story is about the freshmen Hoover. It is interesting to note what is not mentioned in the story. No where does he mention Rocky shooting 37 free throws to Galesburg's 5 free throw attempts. Interesting....

ROCK ISLAND – Rock Island sophomore Mariah Hoover knew that if she wanted to be on the floor at the end of girls' basketball games, she had to start making free throws.

Because of a lot of work at the line after practices in the past several weeks, Mariah was there at the end of Friday night's Western Big 6 Conference game against Galesburg. She hit 6-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes to help the Rocks fend off the Silver Streaks, 62-55.
