Streaks Win

Was it a good night or a bad night? It was a good night in which the girls were able to win when not everything was clicking. There are going to be nights when you are able to execute what you practice, and there are going to be nights when your opponent does not let you execute so you have to find other ways to win. Tonight was a night we found other ways to win.

We gave up a school record 73 rebounds, but Casey Williams had a career high 13 rebounds.

We made only 5 of 35 threes but we took it to the hoop and shot 40 free throws.

Streaks over Quincy in OT

In a tough fought battle, the Streaks beat Quincy in OT- the story frm the Reg-Mail....

Nail biter is a word that definitely describes the Galesburg High School girls basketball teams Western Big 6 conference game against Quincy High School Thursday night at John Thiel Gymnasium.
The contest was a battle of attrition to the very end, as Quincy found themselves down 65-62, with four seconds to play in regulation, when Arai’ya Dade hit a three to send the game into overtime tied at 65 apiece.
That is where the Silver Streaks, ranked at No. 5 in Class 3A, took over, as tough defense and clutch free throw shooting, led to them outscoring Quincy 10-2 in the extra four minutes and escape with the 75-67 win.

Streaks Ranked #5 in Illinois

The Streaks are ranked #5 in the first Illinois basketball poll. We all know polls are more meaningful at the end of the season than at the beginning of the year. We all know that polls are not always accurate.

Despite all of that- our girls should be proud to be rated in the first poll. It is a reflection on several things. It is first a reflection that our present group has worked hard and are seen to have great potential.  And it is also a reflection that our program has a nice tradition.

Jessica Lieber- 1000 Points

Jessica Lieber went over 1000 points for her career in last Saturday's game vs. Freeport. While Jess played a little as a freshmen with the varsity, she has reached 1000 in two seasons and 6 games.  Jess becomes the 14th Streaks girls basketball player to reach 1000 points.

Streaks Big Win & Lieber Hits 1,000

Great night for the Streaks- we defeated Freeport to go 5-1 on the season. Despite not being consistent from 3 point arc, we exploded for 77 points.

Jessica Lieber capped the night by getting to 1000 points for her career. Jess is only the 14th player to reach this milestone for the Streaks girls. Jess has had a great career but has most of her senior year yet to go!!

Alumni NIght

Wow- what a fun night. Lots and lots of good stories to share.

I was especially impressed with '97 team's memories. First thing Sarah Larson said to me,"Remember Freeport game when you pulled us all out and yelled at us." Sadly I do remember that.

Then when I went to take a picture they laughed at me for having an iPhone. Some things don't change- that is what the present players do!!

Basketball, Basketball, Basketball

Thanksgiving in Galesburg means lots of basketball,
everybody in town gets excited about basketball!!
Thanksgiving in Galesburg means basketball. Girls and boys basketball bring about 20 teams to Galesburg for about 75 games.

Our estimate would be that the visiting teams and visiting fans bring about $20-30 thousand dollars in revenue to the Galesburg community over the two weeks.

Hall of Fame & Reunion

The schedule of the Hall of Fame will be dependent on how the tourney games earlier in the day go. So the following is my best estimate of times.

4:00pm  Reception in Learning Center for 1997 team
5:00pm  Hall of Fame Ceremony
6:00pm  Streaks vs. Freeport
7:30pm  Reception at Side Trax for 1997 team, other alums, and families

Note the Hall of Fame Ceremony and the game might start 20-30 minutes earlier or even 20-30 minutes later.

Bits & Pieces

Shooting- I was asked after the game if I was surprised how we came out offensively. The reality is that I have been surprised how we had played offensively the first 4 games. I get to see the girls a lot in the off-season and then in the preseason practices. I know we are not going to come out on fire every game, but from what I see in practice- last night is more typical of how we practice than the first four games are.

1997 Undefeated Streaks- Part II

After winning the Sectional championship over Rocky at Wharton Fieldhouse, we were headed to DeKalb to play Belvidere in the Supersectional. The game was to be played at DeKalb High School.

Belvidere was the team we had beaten in the Super the year before. They were led by Amanda Leavens who was headed to Old Dominion. She had been very good the year before, and she was only better. I think the atmosphere at the Supersectionals when we went to DeKalb and later to NIU were the most exciting atmospheres in high school basketball. The gym was not huge but it was absolutely packed. I don't remember all the details but I remember...

Be Thankful- Great Week of Bball

With all the basketball being played this week in Galesburg, there certainly is a lot to be thankful for!!! Without leaving town, you can see 10 games of bb this week.

Tues- Streaks vs Moline (girls) 530/7pm

Wed- Knox vs Augie (womens) 6pm

         Streaks vs EPeoria (boys) 7:30pm

5 Days + 4 Games= Learning & Growing

So far this year's team has shown the ability to work, listen, and learn. It is great to get wins in November but the key to a successful season is to be the team who improves the most from November to January and then can take it to another level in the month of January. Growth is the key.

Playing four games in just five days forces us to react to a lot of different situations. This week we played vs. 1-2-2 zone, 2-3 zone, 1-3-1 zone, and man to man. We played vs. great guards and some very good post players. The more things you see, the more you have to work to adjust.

Galesburg Tourney Observations

Alleman and Springfield have emerged after week #1 as the leaders in the tourney. It is no surprise Springfield would be in that position but it is impressive for Alleman considering their two best players are out with torn ACL's. It is a tribute to the depth of Alleman. They will play next week at 6:00pm at Knoxville.

After losing to Galesburg and Springfield, East Peoria bounced back with two solid wins over Decatur and LeRoy. EP has certainly turned eyes with the quality of the young players on their roster.

It is clear many of the teams are working to develop consistency. It is good to see as many competitive games as there have been.

Streaks Over Metamora

Streaks beat Metamora 70-40 on Friday night. Balanced scoring the key with Lieber 14, Diggins 13, Teel 10, and Williams 9. Again the Streaks were good for over 10 threes so Threediculous shirt owners got triplecheesburgers from McDonalds.

Saturday the sophs play Springfield at 4:30pm in Thiel. The varsity plays Springfield at 7:00pm. Springfield and Galesburg will enter the game both at 3-0 in the tourney. Springfield has been one of the top 5 teams in 3A the last 4 years, they are moving up to 4A this year and will again be a factor come state time.

Keeping Ego in Check

My son looked thru the season previews in different newspapers. His only comment,"Man, you have lost 272 games a coach. Not many coaches keep their jobs with that many losses."

Reg-Mail- Streaks over EP

This is Robb Stracks story in the Register-Mail....

The Galesburg High School girls basketball team picked up its second straight win to open the season by posting a 64-46 win over East Peoria in the Streaks annual Thanksgiving Tournament on Thursday at Thiel Gym.
The Silver Streaks jumped to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and never were threatened.
Assistant coach Andie Allison, who had to sub for head coach Evan Massey, who lost his voice early in the game, said, “Overall we played much better than we did Tuesday night. Tonight we had more composure on the offensive end and made much better decisions.”

Streaks Beat E.Peoria

Streaks won over East Peoria 64-46. Streaks were led by Jessica Lieber with 24 points & 7 rebounds. Sharron Diggins also had 11 points. Chloe Anderson & Sabrina Clay each had 5 rebounds. Diggins led the Streaks w 6 steals and Clay had 5 steals. The Sophs also beat East Peoria this evening. Tomorrow night the Streaks will play Metamora with an 8pm tip off.

East Peoria did a nice job defensively. They had good height and made it hard to get good looks on the perimeter.

Highlight of the night was the Streaks got 11 threes so everyone with the Threediculous t-shirts got their McDonald's triplecheesburger. The 10th three to get it done was put in by junior Katee Lingafelter.

I would write more but I have lost my voice.

Register-Mail- Streaks Open with Win

From the Galesburg Register-Mail article by Tyler Tingley on our opener....

The Galesburg High School girls basketball team opened up the 2012-13 season Tuesday evening, tipping off their Thanksgiving Tournament at Thiel Gym against Illini West.
Even with “The System” fully in place, things didn’t go smoothly, as the Silver Streaks shot under 18 percent (6-of-34) from behind the arc and even trailed at one point in the fourth quarter. But a late scoring run and clutch free-throw shooting propelled Galesburg to a 70-64 win.
“I thought defensively we came out and had good energy, we didn’t foul and Illini West did a good job breaking pressure and getting some easy shots,” Galesburg coach Evan Massey said.
“I thought offensively for us, shots didn’t drop and then it looked like offensively we played frustrated.

Meet the Streaks History

Some of my most memorable Meet the Streaks experiences (in no particular order).....

1- My first experience was as a boys assistant basketball coach. I am not sure we even had an intrasquad scrimmage at my high school. At GHS, both balconies were open- the main floor seating was nearly filled, and people were spilled into the balcony. There were probably 2000 people at the intrasquad scrimmage- pretty impressive.

1997 Undefeated Streaks- Part I

With the 1997 Streaks going into the GHS Hall of Fame, it has caused me to want to go thru some memories.

In 1996 we had the greatest year in the history of Streaks girls basketball, and maybe to that point, the history of girls sports at GHS. The Streaks led by seniors Sara Wood, Jen Bulkeley, Ami Pendry, and  Jen Wright (hope not missing someone), went on a terror at the end of the year. They made it to State, and captured third place. It was a special year. As we left the floor after getting our third place medals, our two freshmen on the '96 squad were walking in front of me. Jenny Zolper and Sarah Larson were walking arm in arm as they left the floor. Zolp turned to Stork and said,"We're going to do this three more times." I thought, "Oh no, that is unrealistic." I shared with Coach Peachey what I had heard and expressed how unlikely that would be.

Chocolate Milk

The first week of the season our team has gone through four gallons of chocolate milk. It is their post-workout drink.

Here are some reasons it is a good post workout drink:

1st Team Dinner of the Year

The Lieber's hosted the varsity for their first team dinner and a sleep over. Jennifer Lieber reports they finished off 8 pizzas, a lot of chips, 2 pans of brownies, and some cookies. Sounds good!!!

Taj Gibson. Now, that someone you can feel proud about rooting for. And that’s not counting Gibson’s subtle contribution Wednesday with four points, five rebounds and four blocks in the Bulls 93-87 opening night victory over the Sacramento Kings.
Sure, Gibson worked hard and competed, as he usually does. But it was in the minutes after the game where Gibson stood up and declared his love for his team, his teammates and his adopted basketball city.
