My Motivation- Brenna Saline

Brenna Saline is a player who was not afraid of work. She had strong goals in basketball, and was committed to working to achieve her goals. As a result of her hard work, she was not only a great high school player but she went on to become a very good college player.

You had always been a good player coming up in junior high and frosh-soph level.  At some point things took off until by your junior and senior years you were at a different level. In my opinion you went from pretty good to great. How did this happen?
I don't think players understand exactly what "Galesburg Basketball" means until they've been in the program a few years and how to represent it correctly.  It wasn't until my after I'd been in the program a couple seasons to know what it took to turn our team from a good to a great one.

Focus for Summer

Jamie & Andie both did a great job as Streak players in
helping to build a winning culture on their teams!
I am in the process of doing all the jobs I don't like in preparation for our summer basketball- making our summer league schedule, making a ref schedule, lining up coaches for our summer teams, assigning hs players to score games. As I get to the end of these jobs, I anxiously begin to look forward to getting started with our camps, where we get to work with players and our teams.

On the high school level, summer basketball is an exciting time. It is a time in which individuals and the team begin to develop their identity. So much can be achieved individually and collectively in the summer.

5 Principles for Success in Coaching (and anything)

These are from Coach McKinnis. They are his ideas of what it takes to be a successful coach. I think they apply to coaching, playing/competing as an athlete, and just in life in general.

The following are my top 5 lessons I believe every successful coach understands:

1. You are here for a reason and the most important thing you can do in life is to find, live and share your purpose. It's the one thing in life that truly matters and if you don't pursue it, everything else is meaningless.

Why is the Bulls defense so effective?

Coaching the System by Doug Porter & Gary Smith

A new book on "The System" has just been released. It is written by Coach Doug Porter and Gary Smith. It can be argued that Coach Porter and Coach Smith have been the two most successful coaches in implementing Coach Arseneault's System. They have invested 3 years putting this book together.
The following is a description from Coach Porter---

Not to be Negative But...

I posted this yesterday and then somehow it disappeared today. So here I go again. After the Heat defeated the Celtics, the Heat had a huge celebration. LeBron James kneeled on the court and stayed while the media surrounded him for photos. To me it looked too staged. What did the rest of you think? (answer the poll on the right).

Happy Birthday Mom!

Marjorie Evans Massey- Reflector Editor 1929.
My mother (Marjorie Evans Massey) would be 100 years old on Monday, May 11, 2011. She grew up in Galesburg. Her father was a street car driver, and her mother a stay at home mom. They never owned a house or a car. But they made sure they gave her two very important things- love and an education. Before there was such a thing as "Gale Scholars," my mother was a "Gale Scholar." She graduated from Galesburg HS in 1929 and Knox College in 1934.

Jessica Howard- My Motivation

This is #4 in the series of "My Motivation."

I am hoping these will be things that our younger players read and will find some useful ideas in. The intent with these is not to say to players- why don't you shoot like Jessica Howard or why don't you become Molly Watson. The intent is to show that many of our great players became great not because of physical abilities but because of an attitude and because of work ethic. And everyone can work hard.

Tom Thibodeau- "Team Personality"

When Coach Thibodeau received the NBA Coach of Year Award, he showed his leadership. Most of his conversation was about the qualities of his players- he passed the praise onto the players.
