Streaks Alumni Profile- Josh Eiker 2016

Today’s Streaks Alumni Profile features Josh Eiker from the GHS Class of 2016.

Josh is one of the most accomplished athletes in Galesburg HS’s sports history. He won multiple State Championships in track as a sprinter. Josh then went onto have highly successful track career at the University of Illinois.

Every time I had an opportunity to either watch Josh from a distance or interact with him, I was struck by one thing- his humility.

For this Streaks Alumni Profile, I wanted to get someone more familiar with Josh to share a few thoughts. Veteran sports writer, Matt Wheaton was kind enough to share some thoughts about Josh. The following was written by Matt…

Josh Eiker is a decorated sprinter. The 2016 Galesburg High School grad won back-to-back state titles in the 100- and 200-meter dash in two different classes. However, Eiker’s accomplishments on the track don’t define who he is.

In the early days of my 11-year career with Galesburg’s newspaper, I was assigned two beats from the get-go – GHS boys and girls track and field. While time has passed and I don’t recall every detail of every meet, there’s some things that stick out about Mr. Eiker.

When individuals wanted a picture with the GHS Athletic Hall of Famer, Eiker obliged every request, always with a smile on his face. The not‑so‑young man anymore did so whether he had track spikes on his feet or not. It was clear he wasn’t just admired for his achievements but cherished for the kindness he showed to everyone around him.

Any race that he competed in; Eiker couldn’t be counted out from breaking the tape in first place. Win after win, Eiker remained the same. He’s one of the humblest student-athletes that I’ve ever written about, and there’s been dozens of articles I’ve authored about Eiker.

Josh soaked in each victory, but he kept the celebrations to a minimum. The times he clocked spoke for him. He led the Silver Streaks by example, and Eiker set a positive one.

Sports/Activities at GHS, HS Jobs

I played basketball my Freshman year, football Freshman-Junior year and ran track all 4 years. I also worked at Happy Joes during the summer and when I had time during the school year.

Best memories of growing up in Galesburg/attending GHS

The cannon that was set off every time Galesburg scored a touchdown. Even if you weren't at the game you knew we scored and got excited. Someone should bring that back!

Education after GHS, Track experience at Illinois

I went to the University of Illinois to run track. I had a great experience and was able to run for 5 years and graduate with a Masters Degree.

Career

I work for The Libman Company, handling International and Ecommerce Sales.

What are you up to today?

My parents still live in Galesburg and my brother will be a Senior at Monmouth College this fall. I live in Huntley with my fiancé.

As you were training/racing, was there one workout or one race where it opened your eyes to "I think I could win State"?

I wouldn't say a single race or workout but going into my Sophomore year I knew that if I cleaned up my starts I would have a chance. My conditioning was significantly better and I could finish races but it's hard to win when you always start in last.

Advice for present students/athletes and what did you learn through running track that has helped you as an adult?

That working hard creates opportunities.
