There are many things a coach wants to accomplish in the summer. In terms of team development, there are two crucial objectives which will help your team start strong next season.
Discover Your “Go To Offense”
The summer is a great time to experiment with your team offense- try new concepts and experiment with new sets.
During your experimentation, at some point it is important to find the offensive principles and offensive sets that really work well with your players. By the end of the summer, it is important to feel like you have an answer to what is the best offensively for your team.
When you start practice in November, you want to work on the execution of your offense. You do NOT want to be spending a lot of time experimenting to find out what works- that is what summer was for.
Who Can Play?
Summer is a good time to experiment with your playing rotations. Hopefully be the end of the summer you have a sense of who plays well together, and what your best lineups are. That doesn’t mean that you don’t continue to evaluate players in November- some may improve.
You don’t want the first games to be games where you are using them to do a lot of roster experimentation.
Strong Start
As a coach, if you can use summer to develop a strong sense of what is best offensively for your team, and you have a good sense of your playing rotations- your chances of having a strong start at the beginning of the season are increased.
In November, the more time you are spending on execution and repetitions vs on experimentation, the stronger your start will be.
