This Week in Galesburg History (June 15)

“This Week in Galesburg History,” there was lunch for under $5, a tour of Illinois for $7, and a luxury dinner at the Walnut Room.

This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

“This Week in Galesburg History” appears every Monday morning on the WGIL website and Massey Basketball Blog.

100 Years Ago- 1926

Media High School students took the ultimate Illinois field trip. The HS principal drove them by car. The trip included stops in Nauvoo (Mormon founding), Jacksonville (school for deaf), Springfield (Capitol, Lincoln’s tomb and home), Decatur, Champaign (U of Illinois), Kankakee, and Joliet.

The cost of the trip was $7 for each student. I am guessing gas prices were a little cheaper then.

75 Years Ago- 1951
In the 1940’s and 1950’s, one of the premier eating establishments in Galesburg was the American Beauty Restaurant located at 308 East Main St.

This advertisement was making sure people were aware of the private dining option at the Walnut Room that was open for parties and receptions.

50 Years Ago- 1976

It was in 1976 that Galesburg started the demolition of building on East Main St, that led to the development of the Park Plaza. For much of the next four decades, the Park Plaza was sometimes used for small concerts and lunch specials.

More recently, the Plaza was renovated.

25 Years Ago- 2001

For several decades, Sully’s on North Henderson St., was a popular restaurant/bar among Galesburg people, as well as out of town spectators coming to watch their team play the Silver Streaks at the nearby GHS.

This advertisement has two lunch specials that were $4.66 plus tax. Not bad, probably $5 plus cost of your drink.

10 Years Ago- 2016

Galesburg’s State Champion, Josh Eiker was invited to a prestigious national track meet on the West coast. It was an opportunity to run against the best prep runners in Amerca.

Eiker did more than hold his own as he finished 5th in the 100 meter dash. Josh is one of the greatest athletes in GHS history.
