GHS Announces 2026 Athletic Hall of Fame
















Galesburg High School’s Athletic Director, Nick Young announced the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026. The Class of 2026 will be presented at an induction ceremony on Saturday, November 28 at the Hegg Performing Arts Center at GHS. The induction ceremony will take place at 5:00pm.

Jarvis Hardges (1996, Individual)























Jarvis was a three-sport standout in football, basketball, and track. He was selected All-State in football, and was invited to the USA All-Star game in England. As a senior, he led the Streaks in scoring and receiving.


He lettered in basketball his junior and senior years, and went onto play basketball at Carl Sandburg. 


Later, he went onto play arena football in Chicago, semi-pro football in Peoria, as well as semi-pro basketball in Peoria. 




Ryan Ricketts (2011, Individual)


























Ryan earned 10 varsity letters at GHS. He was three times an All-WB6 selection in both football and track. He earned All-State honors in both football and track. 


He placed 8th at State in the shot put, and ranked as 3rd all-time in the shot as a senior. 


He went onto play football for Western Illinois University. 





Ted Trueblood (1994, Individual)


























Ted was a three time All-WB6 selection in basketball, and was All-State as a senior. He finished his career in basketball in the Top Ten All-Time in scoring at GHS. 


In baseball, he was a two time letter winner. At the time of his graduation, he was the single season leader in RBI’s. 


Ted went onto play both basketball and baseball at Knox College. He was selected All-Midwest Conference in baseball. 




Cindi Watson (1987, Veteran)


























Cindy was one of the all-time greatest girls golfers in GHS history. She won the WB6 individual championship as a sophomore, junior, and senior. (It should be noted that GHS was a three-year high school at this time, which prevented her from winning four titles.)


In 1984 as a sophomore, she finished 9th in State, and then in 1986 as a senior, she finished 11th in State. Girls golf during this era was one-class golf. 


Cindy received a full-scholarship to Northern Illinois, where she was a four year letter winner. 




Jay Barshinger (Coach)

























Jay was a longtime teacher and coach at both Churchill and Galesburg HS. 


At Churchill, he coached wrestling, girls basketball, and track. 


At GHS, Jay coached girls basketball for 22 years and football for 33 years. 

He is one of the longest tenured coaches in GHS history. 


Jay was considered a master teacher when it came to fundamentals in any sport he coached.




Ray VanHootegem (Coach)


















Ray coached girls swimming for 33 years, and boys swimming for 14 years.  

His girls teams won 12 WB6 championships, including 8 in a row. The girls had 5 undefeated dual meet seasons, and won 3 Sectional championships. 

His boys teams went undefeated over the last four years- 36-0. They won 3 WB6 championships, and 3 Sectional championships. 

In his 46 seasons of coaching swimming at GHS, Ray had individuals qualify for State in 31 of the years. The Streaks swimmers were one of the best in western Illinois during Ray’s tenure. 




Jay Redfern (Friend of Athletics)
















Jay Redfern is a 1981 Galesburg High School graduate, where he was a statistician for the basketball program under Barry Swanson and for baseball under Gary Bruington.

He has been involved in Galesburg media full time for 41 consecutive years, beginning in 1985. He spent 37 years at the Galesburg Register-Mail, where he started as a sports writer before becoming assistant sports editor and later assistant editor. He wrote the popular Silver Streaks Insider column and served as beat writer for Galesburg High School football, boys and girls basketball, and baseball — including the 1988 state baseball championship team, the 1998 boys basketball state runner-up team, and several GHS girls basketball teams that advanced to state. He also covered all other Silver Streaks sports, along with area high schools and colleges.


He joined WGIL in 2022 and currently serves as content director, host of Galesburg's Morning News program, and podcast host.


For decades, Jay has helped to “shine light” on the achievements of Streaks athletes. Today he has turned WGIL into Galesburg’s source for local news and sports on WGIL’s website.

This is the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Streaks basketball team. Since the IHSA went away from a one-class basketball State Tourney, only two GHS boys teams have advanced to State- ‘76 and ‘98 Streaks. 


GHS won the WB6 Championship with an undefeated 10-0 season. 


The ‘76 Streaks beat the undefeated, #1 ranked Richwoods Knight in the Regional championship. The game was played in Thiel Gym, and is still considered by many to be the greatest game played in Thiel Gym. Galesburg had lost earlier in the year to the Knights, but pulled out a 


The Streaks finished the season at 27-4, losing to Morgan Park in the Elite 8. Morgan Park went onto win the State Championship.
