Basketball is a long season. At every level, it is a challenge for coaches to balance being positive and praising players, and being demanding and critical of players.
Don Nelson was one of the all-time most successful coaches in NBA history. He coined the idea that coaches need to realize that in effect coaches have only “six bullets.”
Nelson meant coaches need to realize they have a limited number of times they can intensely and emotionally challenge their players. Coaches need to have a judicious use of intense confrontations and emotional outbursts, whether in practices or in games.
If a coach is constantly relying on yelling at the team or questioning players- at a certain point, it just becomes noise to the players.
When HS coaches think about practices, games, and even the off-season- how many “bullets” do you use to try to motivate the team.
Are you motivating or are you just noise?
