When we talk about getting the “ball inside”, we usually think about getting the ball to the low post. Today, more and more pro and college teams want to get the ball to the elbow. From the elbow, there are a lot of good DHO and Zoom actions, but it is a great clear out situation.
Usually coaches are NOT looking to add complex actions, but this involves some simple ways to get the ball to the elbow to either a player who has great one on one skills, or who is quick off the dribble, or a player who will have a mismatch with a slower defender.
The idea is to get the ball to the elbow (you could do these things to either elbow). And the idea is to get the ball to the elbow, have the opposite side cleared out. Once the player gets the ball at the elbow, they want to do one of two things:
A- Just catch and immediately go, and keep going. The defense may cover 1-2 dribbles but you keep going.
B- Face up, shot fake, and go.
Diagram #1- This shows what you want to end up with. The ball at the elbow and a clear out. The next 4 diagrams show 4 different ways to get a player the ball at the elbow. And obviously, you could choose the player to put in the clear out.
Diagram #2- Simple flash to the elbow.
Diagram #3- Post screens away for a guard to flash to the elbow. This may result in X5 switching onto #3, which is good.
Diagram #4- In this case, #3 screens for #5. You are hoping to get the defenders to switch.
Diagram #5- This is simply bringing a wing off of a post to the elbow.
