Coaches’ Corner: Stagger Actions for Threes

Shuffle Cut into Stagger Action
Diagram #1- They enter the stagger action by #1 bringing it up on the break and reversing the ball to #4 then #3. #1 cuts off a screen by #5.

Diagram #2- #2 sets up the cut and comes of the staggers of #5 and #4.

Point Guard Give & Go into Stagger Action
Diagram #4- In this action, #1 passes to #3 and cuts to post up. This might be something where you would want to put a big guard in this position and get a post up if you don’t need a three.

Diagram #5- #4 and #5 set the stagger for #2 coming up.

Diagram #6- As soon as they complete the stagger, #1 will come thru an elevator screen from #5 and #4.

Slip Action into Stagger Action
Diagram #7- On pass to wing, opposite wing (#2) cuts along baseline, while #4 sets backscreen for #1.

Diagram #8- The ball is reversed. #3 starts down to screen for #2 but slips the screen to post up on the opposite side.

Diagram #9- While #3 slips, then #5 and #4 set stagger for #2.

Diagram #10- After the stagger, #3 comes thru an elevator screen.

Stagger Variations
Diagram #11- Traditional stagger cut, #2 goes off #4 and #5’s screens.

Diagram #12- #2 curls around #5, and #5 goes off #4.

Diagram #13- #2 curls around #4 and #5 goes off #4.

Diagram #14-15- #2 cuts off the staggers, then reverses as #4 and #5 set a fade screen for #2.
