Everyone runs some form of a screen the screener action. This is a common screen action out of a horns set. Some people run it this way, and other run it by having #4 set a fade screen for #1- then throwing a skip pass.
A key to this action is to get a good quick ball reversal. If #4 hangs onto the ball too long, it will not work.
#2 cuts hard and #5 reads whether to cut over or under the screen. #4 steps in after reversing the ball to screen for #2 to pop out for a shot. The slower #4 moves into screen then the screen is higher and #2’s shot will be farther out.
Counter- In the counter to the normal screen the screener, we clear the side out by having #3 cut baseline. The earlier that #3 cuts, the better. The side is cleared out to set #5 for backdoor cut.
Counter- Another option with the side cleared out is for #5 to simply drive into the clear out.
Counter- We don’t run the back door or the clear out, so we run the regular action of the screen the screener play.
Counter Play- We run the regular screen for #5 to cut to the strong side post. Instead of #4 screening down for #2, #2 goes up and sets a Backscreen for #4 to go for the lob. If you run the normal play enough times first, you get the Backscreen lob. And it is not unusual to sometimes get the defense to cover both posts cutting, and to leave #2 alone as they step out for an open three.
