Galesburg Lockeroom- Streaks Pride & Tradition

In basketball, it is very important to have a designated locker room. You want a place to post schedules, stats, goals, and motivational information. In addition, you want a place to be able to watch game film. Unlike some other sports, in basketball you are going to be in a locker room for pre-game, half-time, and post game.

For many years, Galesburg boys basketball had a designated meeting area and lockeroom. It existed back in the early 1970’s. Girls finally got a designated locker room in the early 1990’s.

Barry Swanson was the boys basketball coach and an assistant principal at the time. Barry’s daughter, Lara had played for the Streaks earlier. When I expressed that i wished we had our own locker room, Barry agreed that it was needed. In his position as an administrator, he talked with the principal and the AD.

They came up with the room that is still used as the locker room. It was a custodian’s storage room for mops, cleaning materials, etc. Obviously, the custodians were initially not happy with the decision. It was a small room, but it was ours.

As soon as the room was our’s, the girls worked hard to raise money to furnish the room. They raised money for carpet, a dry erase board, paint, wood to build lockers, and chairs. Phil Price cut the wood for the lockers and fathers came in and put the wooden lockers together. Players painted the walls.

For years, the most treasured thing in the locker room was my used sofa. The room was great for team bonding. The players came early for practice and stayed late after practice to just hang out and talk.

As the years went by, improvements were made and then more improvements made. When GHS was recently remodeled, the school replaced the lockers. The lockers are built so the players actually sit in them for pre-game, half-time, and post-game. The seat is on a hinge so players can store things under it.

Lots of players have worked to build this locker room. The room is a constant reminder to present players of the work, commitment, and pride of past players.

The players raised money for wraps on the hallway outside the locker room.

The players raised money for wraps above the lockers- one wall has motivational things on the wall. It is hoped these are foundations of the team culture.

The wraps in other parts of the room are pictures of “celebrations” of past players. It is hoped the images express both tradition and joy for team.

On the wall above the lockers, there are pictures of former players who earned All-State Honors. It is hoped these pictures are an inspiration to players about what is possible.

Sitting above the player’s lockers are the major awards that have been given in the past. It is hoped that if the players see these each day that they serve as a reminder of the programs values.

The lockers are big enough to put team trophies above them.

The last thing players see before they leave the locker room- “Next Play.”

A plaque celebrating past leaders.
