In 1957, Ernie Eveland (Paris) and Duster Thomas (Pinckneyville) were show sitting in the lobby of Galesburg’s Custer Hotel. The Custer was in downtown Galesburg 3 blocks from Galesburg High School. Eveland and Thomas were considered legends in Illinois HS basketball at this time. They had brought their teams to Galesburg to play vs. the Silver Streaks.
In 1931, the Galesburg Red Devils came close to winning a State Championship. They fell in the championship game to Decatur. In one of the most memorable games in IHSA tourney history, Galesburg beat Johnson City 28-27 in overtime. Galesburg’s Ebbie Bilden hit a free throw with no time left on the clock to win the game and send the Galesburg Red Devils to the title game. In this picture taken in the 1950’s, Ebbie Bilden and his coach, Gerald Phillips are caught in conversation.
