Megan Pacheco was a 5’9” All-State guard who played for the Streaks from 1996-2000. She had the ability to defend 1-5, shoot the three, handle the ball vs pressure, and post up inside. During her career, Galesburg finished 4th in State, Elite 8, 2nd in State, and 4th in State.
Jaque Howard was the All-State point guard on the team. Jaque was one of the all-time best three point shooters for Galesburg. In 2000, she made 74-154 on threes for 48%.
Sarah Pacheco was a 6’0” post who could shoot threes.
This play was set up to take advantage of these three players. In particular, we wanted to either get a lob to our bigger guard or a three for our point guard.
Initially, we ran our #2 (Michelle Flaar) off two baseline screens. If she had a shot, she could take it.
Our #5 who was a shooting threat popped to the corner, while our #4 came across the lane to post up. The drawing doesn’t show it, but we wanted our #4 to post up mid-lane to pull their defender a little higher.
Our #1 after passing had cut down to the weakside block. #1 came to back screen for #3. Generally, point guard defenders are great on the ball defenders who can excellent pressure on a dribbler. Generally, point guard defenders are not great off the ball defenders and they are locked into stopping the point guard. As a result, using #1 as the screener worked very well.
After screening, #1 would pop to the arc. #2 could pass to #3 for the lob or to #1 stepping to the top for a three.
Often screens with a point guard defender result in confusion. It was not unusual for our #1 to be standing at the top of the key unguarded.
If we did not have the lob and #1 did not have the three, #1 would dribble off to get the ball below the foul line extended for a post up for #3. In the meantime, #4 screened for #5 to come to the high post. This usually kept their defenders busy.
If we could not enter to #3 in the low post, a pass to the high post resulted in a nice high low action for #3.
