Jerry Leggett Team Value Points- Many coaches have adapted some form of the stat evaluation similar to what Jerry Leggett first used in the 1980’s. His scoring system involved each stat being given a value- FGM 2, 3M 3, Assist 2, O-Reb 2, D-Reb 1, Steal 2, Draw Charge +2, FGMiss -1, 3 Miss -1, Turnover -2.
Some coaches then grade players on defense and give them plus/minus for some of the areas.
Leggett always left one spot on his varsity tourney team to be filled by the player off the FS team who had the highest TV score.
eFG%- This is commonly used and is calculated by Hudl. It is a way of evaluating a shooter, but crediting the making of threes as an adjusted formula. All people in analytics would say that eFG% is more accurate measure than FG%.
The formula for eFG% is: 2 Point FG Makes + (1.5 x 3 Point FG Makes) / Total FGA’s.
TS%- On the NBA level, the measure they use to evaluate shooters is “Tru Shot Pct.” This measure brings into play 2 point shooting, 3 points shooting, and free throw shooting. The formula is”
Points / 2 (All FGA’s + 0.44 x FTA’s)
Elite pro players score above 60% on this. The average NBA player will score around 55%.
Offensive Positive vs Negative Outcomes- This is an attempt to break down offensive efficiency of individual players. It is looking to see if a player ends the team’s offensive possessions in a positive or negative fashion.
Offensive Positive Outcome Score= (1 x 2’s FG Makes) + (1.5 x 3 Makes) + (.5 x Assists) + (.5 x FT Makes)
Offensive Negative Outcome Score= (1 x All FG Misses) + (1 x Turnovers) + (.5 x All FT Misses)
This is just a quick look at how your offensive possessions end. Does a player offensively have your team have a positive or a negative outcome.
