Phil Theobald with the Streaks at State- 1968, 1997, 2001

Phil Theobald was a 1959 graduate of Galesburg High School. In 1959, the Streaks were coached by John Thiel. That year the Streaks were #1 in State for most of the year before finishing 3rd in State. Phil Theobald grew up a Silver Streak, when the Streaks were at the center of the Illinois basketball world.

He became famous as sports writer, first with the Galesburg Register but for most of his career at the Peoria Journal Star. For those of you who have watched YouTube version of the famous 1976 Galesburg vs Richwoods Regional game, Phil was the man they interviewed on the broadcast.

I have included in this post, three examples where his Streaks roots came out in his work.

1968- He was covering the Elite 8 game in Champaign of Effingham vs Galesburg. Effingham was undefeated and ranked #1 in the State. Galesburg completely dismantled the Flaming Hearts, 85-52.

1997- Galesburg girls team lost in the Semi-Finals at State for the second year in a row. This time it was to Taylorville.

2001- Galesburg girls team lost to Nequa Valley in the Semi-Finals at State.
