“This Week in Galesburg History”
Evar Swanson took one high and inside, kids at Douglas School just wanted to play, and it was time to fly from Galesburg to Chicago….
This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?
“This Week in Galesburg History” appears every Monday morning on the WGIL website and Massey Basketball Blog.
100 Years Ago- 1926
In the era before batting helmets, Galesburg’s legendary athlete, Evar Swanson was knocked out when hit in the head by a pitched baseball.
Evar had been a star at Lombard College and was the guard in the famous stall game that helped lead to major changes in the rules of basketball. He went onto play in the major leagues. He still hold the record for a timed run around the bases.
Mr. Swanson was longtime community leader and Postmaster in Galesburg.
75 Years Ago- 1951
In the era before video games and TV, the newspaper photographer takes a picture of young boys playing pick up baseball. The softball game was on a summer afternoon at Douglas School playground. The games were completely organized by the kids with no adults involved.
The photographer said there were 35–40 boys playing. After the photo, the photographer was asked if he could leave so they could continue the game.
50 Years Ago- 1976
Galesburg was losing their Ozark flight service and picked up Britt Airlines to replace Ozark. The plan was for Britt to provide service from Galesburg to Rock Falls to Chicago, with four flights per week.
25 Years Ago- 2001
Evidently some people don’t need home security protection services. A Galesburg resident didn’t need an alarm system, he prevented a burglar with his machete.
10 Years Ago- 2016
Dwight White is part of a group planting trees throughout Galesburg. This tree planting initiative has continued on thru today. It has not only planted trees throughout the community, it has been just one more example of Galesburg citizens stepping up and volunteering to make the community a better place.
