“This Week in Galesburg History,” Ryan Kohl was hot, the Orpheum was cool, and Jimmie Johnson’s Car #48 became a favorite.
This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?
“This Week in Galesburg History” appears Mondays on the WGIL website and Massey Basketball Blog.

Stamm’s was celebrating their 28th Birthday with sales.
For business and social outings, a suit was standard dress for men. It is interesting that they sold suits with two trousers because of how much they were going to be worn. On sale, the suits ranged from $18.45 to $32.65. While they were there, a man could pick up some underwear for $0.39 or a dress shirt for $1.39.

For $0.37 you could go to the Orpheum for a movie. Gary Cooper’s You’re in the Navy Now was just finishing. Coming next was Danny Kaye’s On the Rievera.
Two of the plugs were that the Orpheum was “comfortably cool,” perhaps it was air-conditioned? The other plug was that, “You never saw so much before.”

Sorry, two weeks in a row looking at Little League boxscores. O.N. Custer Park was a happening place in the summer.
I was able to pick out some names of future Streaks- McMahon, couple Andersons, Harding, Owen, Unger, Nicholson, Shive, Holloway, Stufflebeen, Goodman, and MGinn.

Ryan Kohl had a Spring where he attacked the GHS baseball record book. Here are some of his numbers…
** Batting average .542- only Ryan and Bob Jackson (.563) had hit over .500 in GHS history at that point.
** Home Runs- 10- Only Corney Stanley with 11 had more.
** RBI’s 39
** Slugging Pct- 1.094, no other GHS player had ever been over 1.000. That happens when you have 10 HR’s and 19 Doubles.
** Strike Outs- 3- Yes, only 3!!
Ryan Kohl was headed to Eastern Illinois to play baseball.

In an emotional article, Jay Redfern interviewed the widow of fallen soldier, Sgt. 1st Class, Kyle Wehrly. Kyle had been killed in 2005 near Bagdad.
Memorial Day weekend, the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte honored fall soldiers in what they called, “NASCAR’s 600 Miles of Remberence.”
Kyle had worked at Lowe’s, and his name was on Jimmy Johnson’s car #48 which was sponsored by Lowe’s. Kyle’s wife (Janet) and daughter (Kylee), as well as his mother, stepfather, and brother were all guests of Jimmy Johnson.
In the interview with Redfern, Janet Wehrly shared their experience in Charlotte.
