Coaches’ Corner- All of us “steal” or “share” plays with each other. This is a play that Ottawa and Coach Mike Cooper ran against us one summer. They scored 3-4 layups and hit 2-3 threes off this play. We put it, and it became our best play for several years.
Figure 1- The ball is swung to #3 stepping up to get the ball. #2 runs the baseline to the short corner. We liked to put a big guard in the spot of #3 or a post player in that position. We wanted #2 to be our best shooter.
Figure 2- After passing #4 sets a backscreen for #1 headed to the basket. You can get #1 for a layup on this cut with the side cleared out.
Figure 3- The ball is reversed around to #1. #3 starts down to screen for #2. #3 doesn’t need to cut hard but definitely wants to sell they are going down to screen for #2.
Figure 4- #3 will not get to #2’s defender but will cut to post up on the opposite side. So it is not really slipping a screen but is cutting a step before screening. Often you can either get a layup or a nice post up vs teams who are looking to switch.
Figure 5- #2 had set up their cut and even though they don’t get the screen from #3, they are going to cut up off the stagger of #5 and #4.
Note- With the stagger, you can do all the things you normally do with a stagger action. You can have #3 not stop at the block and cut to the corner. So you can have #2 curl off either screen and go to the basket, or you can have either #4 or #5 slip on the screen.
