Today’s Streaks Alumni Profile is with Carlos Interial and Shelly (Workheiser) Interial. They were in the GHS Class of 1984.
Carlos and Shelly were successful students and athletes at GHS. They started dating during their senior year at GHS, and this past December just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary!
They have not only shared their memories of their GHS years, but their life after GHS. It is so impressive to read all they have achieved in their careers, their community, and with their wonderful family.
What were some of your favorite teachers/classes?
Shelly- I had several favorite teachers and classes my Sophomore, Junior and Senior Years. Barb Devena was my favorite teacher at GHS she taught Business Education. I also enjoyed Chemistry class with Mr. Spencer and Drivers Ed with Mr. Hickey.
Carlos- My favorite class was American Studies, a two hour class that was taught by Joe Patterson and Hal Devore. I also enjoyed Chemistry class that was taught by Bruce Spencer. Not only did I like the teachers, but the students were many of the same individuals that were in both of these classes.
What are some of your favorite memories?
Shelly- My fondest memories at GHS were going to the football and basketball games and sitting in the student section with my friends and then going to either Happy Joes or Pizza Hut after the games.
Carlos- Believe it or not, I enjoyed many of the academic challenges experienced at GHS. Of course the sports memories from football and baseball also stand out. The bon fires for football, Friday night games and then getting together after the game with some of my fellow players at the local Pizza Hut. Putting in the work to achieve positive results applied to both academic and sports efforts.
When did you and Carlos start dating?
Shelly- Carlos and I started dating in October of our senior year. He proposed to me our sophomore year of college, We had always talked about getting married after we finished college, but we started our family early and ended up getting married the end of our sophomore year of college.
What did you do after GHS graduation?
Shelly- I went on to Carl Sandburg Jr. College after HS and played volleyball and softball and finished with an Associates Degree in Business.
Carlos- Yes, I attended Knox College after my high school years. I received a BA in Economics. I was lucky enough to continue playing sports at Knox College, participating in both football and baseball. I played football with many outstanding players at the division three level. Baseball was similar. I pitched on outstanding teams enjoying a conference championship during my sophomore season. The baseball team from that sophomore season was inducted into the Knox College Hall of Fame in 2016. I believe that I still hold the single season wins and strikeouts record to this day. In ensuing years, I was lucky enough to still enjoy baseball by coaching all three of my boys in American Legion baseball or traveling baseball teams. I still like to play catch with my sons when the opportunity arises.
What have you done as a career?
Shelly- After getting married, I became a housewife and did a lot of volunteering in the schools my kids attended. Then when our youngest daughter and son were in HS I started working at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield as the Membership Engagement Specialist and have been there going on 16 years. I absolutely love what I do and meet new people everyday.
Carlos- 4. For my career, this June will be my 38th year with United Parcel Service. I was a seasonal driver helper during my college days and then was hired on as a driver after graduating from Knox College. After six months of driving, I was promoted into management and have assumed various roles over my career. I was lucky enough to travel on behalf on UPS to Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, while supporting emerging operations in those countries. Currently, I am a Health and Safety Operations Manager in the Chicagoland area.
What are you up to these days?
Shelly- Carlos and I have 5 Children: Christopher, Kraig, Katie, Kendall and Carley. We have 12 Grandchildren and 1 on the way, we are very Blessed! My Mom is still in Galesburg and we try and visit frequently when we can. We have lived in different areas of Illinois after we got married. We started in Galesburg, then to Decatur IL with Carlos’s job, then back to Knoxville Il where we had our last 4 children. Then back to Decatur again with UPS for 11 years and then finally to Plainfield Il, where we have lived here for 17 years.
