“This Week in Galesburg History,” it was a time that you better show your City Sticker and your GHS student ID, football teams separated by 50 years were both getting ready to start their seasons.
This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

100 Years Ago- 1926
Flooding along the Santa Fe and CB & Q lines caused the loss of about 80 miles of track. Until they could be repaired, those trains used the Burlington tracks which were still functioning.
75 Years Ago- 1951
Coach Ted Mansager watched over the Silver Streaks linemen as they worked out in preparation for the season.
Many of the Streaks probably reported to camp in good shape. Today we debate the summer sports activities of high school athletes, but in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s the Streaks had an unusual summer football program.
According to some players from the ‘40’s and early ‘50’s, Coach VanDyke ran a corn detassling crew and “encouraged” football players to participate. They worked on the corn, had a break and did football work, did some more corn, and did more football at lunch.
In the 1951-2 season the Streaks finished 4-5.
50 Years Ago- 1976
For years at this time of year a common refrain in homes was, “Honey, did you pick up the City Sticker yet?”
Cars without the sticker could be pulled over and ticketed.
A young Churchill teacher once had a grumpy old teacher report to friends at the Galesburg police department that the young teacher did not have a City sticker and what time the young teacher got to work.
The next morning the police were waiting, pulled over the young teacher with lights flashing in front of students arriving at school.
25 Years Ago- 2001
Amidst increased security concerns throughout the nation, Galesburg HS became one of many schools requiring students to have their student ID’s on their person and visible.
Over the next 25 years, the ID’s were used to allow the school to become cashless and speed up the lunch process.
10 Years Ago- 2016
The Silver Streaks jumped out to a huge 48-7 win over Dunlap to start the 2016 season. Unfortunately Galesburg won only one more game that season and finished with a 2-7 record.
The good news is that the following year the Silver Streaks made the IHSA Play-Offs with a 5-4 record under Coach Zach Shay.
