This Week in Galesburg History (May 18, 2026)

“This Week in Galesburg History”
There were a couple Don Morris Award Winners, employment was going up, and Babe Ruth had some advice.

This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

“This Week in Galesburg History” appears Mondays on the WGIL website and on Massey  Basketball Blog.

100 Years Ago- 1926
The Legendary Babe Ruth shared his tips on batting in “Secrets of the Stars on Inside Baseball.”  His most important advice, “You can’t make base hits with your bat on your shoulder.”

He goes onto to say,”There are certain pitches that I hit better than others. Often I am content to take a strike or two in the hope the pitcher will finally get one in my groove.”

75 Years Ago- 1951
Employment numbers were up and growing Galesburg. There were over 300 new jobs in the last two months from February 15 to April 15.

The largest increase was at Butler Manufacturing that had an additional 50 employees. In total there were now 4,632 jobs in manufacturing in Galesburg.

In total during this two month period, Galesburg went from 8,127 employed to 8,444 employed.

50 Years Ago- 1976
Before the crush of all the travel sports, Little League was huge in Galesburg. It was so big that the actual boxscores were included in the newspaper.

I recognize some names of players who went onto have great careers as Silver Streaks- Holloway, Yeager, Ripperger, Blackwell, Owens, Bednarcik, McKillip, Maxwell, Davison, Glasnovich, Howard, and more.

25 Years Ago- 2001
Caricia Andrews was selected by the WB6 AD’s as the winner of the Don Morris Award as the outstanding athlete in the conference.

Caricia participated in volleyball, cheerleading, and track. She had won the IHSA AA State title in the long jump as a junior.

10 Years Ago- 2016
Shayli Florine was selected as the winner of the Don Morris Award by the WB6 AD’s as the outstanding athlete in the conference.

Shayli had played in volleyball, basketball, and track. She had been All-WB6 in volleyball and basketball, and won the WB6 title in the shot put.
