Coaches’ Corner- This is one of the best screener the screener actions. If the ball is reversed quickly and the cut is hard and the screener good- it is a great way to get a ball into the post.
Figure 1- This is a screen the screener action that many people use. Like with most actions, the play is only average at best if the execution is not precise. The first thing is that #4 must try to get the ball at a spot where they are a shooting threat, this will mean the defender has to get up on them and cannot sag off.
Figure 2- The key is that #5 must reverse the ball immediately after catching it. #4 must be able to cut hard immediately after reversing the ball. If the reverse is done quickly, #1 should have the ball as #4 is cutting. #2 is going to cut up the lane as the ball leaves #4’s hands.
Figure 3- As soon as #5 reverses the ball to #1, #5 goes down to screen #2. It is important for #5 to get to the ft line at least for the screen. This creates space for #2 to get open at the top of the key.
Figure 4- The counter to the screen the screener obviously will work best if the basic play is run first several times. As soon as this play starts, #3 will run baseline to the opposite corner.
Figure 5- The same quick reversal is important.
Figure 6- With the counter, after #5 reverses the ball, they will just stand. After #2 screens for #4, they will turn and set a back screen for #5. #1 will look for the lob to #5. What is interesting is that sometimes after #2 screens if they just pop out, they will be open for a shot as both defenders will go with #5.
