1966 G-Club- This is a picture of the G-Club in 1966. In the 1960’s, most athletes bought letterman’s jackets. Jackets were sold at Gale Wards on North Prairie. The school gave Gale Wards a list of varsity letter winners. Only G-Club members could purchase a jacket. If an athlete won a sophomore letter, they were not yet eligible to purchase a jacket.
If an athlete could not afford a jacket, there were several boosters who anonymously bought jackets for them.
1964 G-Club- This is the 1964 G-Club. The letterman’s jacket was uniformly worn for the picture. The G-Club sold pencils and scorecards at the basketball games, as well as running a coat check.
1963 Wrestling Team- 1963 wrestling team posed for a championship picture with all of them wearing letter jackets. If you look closely, everyone had the G on their left chest, and then their graduation year on the right chest.
Traditional Letter- Thru the years, the G has remained the same. Originally athletes got a metal pin that indicated the sport they earned the letter. Somewhere in the ‘80’s or ‘90’s, the athletes got a cloth patch to sew on the letter indicating the sport.
Championship G- If the team won a conference, regional, or sectional championship, the letter they were awarded indicated that. In the 1960’s, the championships were in bold letters sewed onto the letter.
Traditional Jacket- The basic letter jacket has remained the same since the 1960’s. In the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, the jacket just put the letter on the front and the numerals on the other side.
Letter Sweaters- In the ‘60’s, athletes also wore a button down sweater with a G on it.
Girls Jacket- When girls sports started in the 1970’s, they were not allowed into the G-Club initially, and they had a separate letter jacket. The majority of girls thought the boys jacket was better looking. The first female athlete to get the “boys jacket” was Shannon Johnson in the late ‘80’s. By the 1990’s, no girls were buying the “girls jacket.”
Individual Decoration- By the late 1990’s, individual athletes chose to decorate their jacket in different manners. This jacket has designation of a captain, and two letters on the front.
2000’s & Letter Jackets- By the 2000’s, there were multiple stores where a student could purchase an “authentic” Streaks letter jacket. The school had begun to award letters for academics, music, performing arts, and other activities. So students could show their pride in many different areas.
The school awards one varsity letter, and then a student can buy a second if they choose.
Today the number of students with letter jackets has greatly diminished. The jackets cost around $200.
