Retirement is great, Amy and I had an opportunity in early January to go south. We visited Birmingham, Alabama and Oxford Mississippi. I would highly recommend a visit to these towns of the south.
We visited the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham. It is a very powerful experience. This was our second visit to the museum. It is run by the National Park Service so if you have a park pass, it is free.
Displays showed the violence against African-American demonstrators.
A duplicate of the jail cell that King was placed.
King’s letter from the Birmingham jail.
16th Street Baptist Church is located across the street from the museum.
The bombing resulted in the death of four young girls.
I would highly recommend a visit to the Civil Right Museum.
Our visit was an opportunity for us to see family and to see Allen and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa played at Alabama Birmingham.
UAB’s arena is named for coaching legend Gene Bartow.
The game did not turn out as we had hoped but it was great to have family together.
Amy, Minnie, Nellie, and I continued our trip onto Oxford, Mississippi and Ole Miss.
The Lyceum is where James Meredith enrolled with the help of the National Guard.
The Lyceum.
The Grove is famous “tail-gating” area complete with chandeliers and china before Ole Miss football games.
Coolidge Ball is honored as the first African-American athlete to attend Ole Miss.
Coolidge Ball attended from 1970-74.
On the edge of the campus is Rowan Oak, the home of William Faulkner.
The downtown square in Oxford is just what you expect a small southern town would look like.
I would recommend a visit to Birmingham and Oxford. Lots to see and lots to eat!! Even Minnie and Nellie had fun.
