When I coached, Musgrove FH was not my favorite place to play. In the large fieldhouse, the baskets were far from any walls and we never seemed to shoot well. The real problem was that Sterling’s teams were always well coached and their players always played hard.
As a fan, Musgrove FH is one of my favorite places to watch a game. The gym is impressive, and it is like attending a museum in their lobby area. I have gone to watch lots of college and high school games, and Sterling’s displays are second to nobody. Any administrator who is thinking about remodeling or updating their gym should go to Sterling for ideas.
Homer Musgrove Plaque- The fieldhouse opened in 1951 and was named for Homer Musgrove in 1979.
First State Champs- When you enter, the first thing you see above the entrance is the sign recognizing the first state champs in girls basketball.
FH Seating- There is seating on all four sides of the court to give it an arena feel.
Multiple Courts- Often great spectator gyms only have one court that makes practices tough. I am not sure but Musgrove has at least 3 full courts going sideways.
Classic Banners- Just so you won’t forget, you can find the banner for all their teams, and the first girls basketball state champs.
Center Court Scoreboard- They have a scoreboard hanging from center court, complete with wide screens on all four sides. They can put on ads, but also have ability to keep stats of the game posted.
TV Coverage- Sterling covers all of their basketball games (and other sports) with live TV coverage.
Concession- So you are working the concession stand, you can watch the game live on the wide screen TV.
Instant Replays- With their TV coverage, they are able to have game replays on the scoreboard during timeouts, and half-times.
Rosters- The player rosters for the game are obtained by using a QR codes.
Eades Award- They have a display explaining the award they give to their outstanding male and female athletes each year.
Eades Award Winners- They have a picture display spotlighting the individual award winner for the last two years.
Eades Award Winners From Last Year
Hall of Fame Touchscreen- They have a touch screen where you can find write ups about every single individual, coach, and team selected to the HOF.
This is Steve Walton, who I went to college with at Knox College. He coached at Sterling for over 30 years. One of the most impressive thing in his bio is that while playing high school sports, college sports, and coaching- he never played or coached on a losing team. That may be the most impressive athletic feat that I have ever heard.
Steve’s write up is detailed and thorough, as are all of them.
SHS Current Team Video Highlights- One of the 12 video screens allows you to select video highlights of current Sterling teams.
Roscoe Eades Award Winners- If you want to go back decades to find pictures and write ups about past winners.
SHS Athletic HOF Team Videos- I was able to go back and watch video of Sterling 1970 boys basketball team, and pick out college teammate, Steve Yemm in game action.
SHS Athletic HOF Teams- If you want to find a team that has been inducted, you can go back and find their team picture and their achievements.
SHS Athletic HOF Individual Videos- They have videos of individual HOF athletes in action.
SHS Distinguished Alumni- They select outstanding achievements in their alumni and have their descriptions.
Individual and Coach Inductees- Pictures and descriptions of the achievements of individuals and coaches who have been selected into the HOF.
State Champs- You can find pictures and descriptions of individual and team state champs.
SHS Recent Team Honors- They have pictures of recent teams, who have won championships.
Job Well Done- Past Athletic Director-Greg King, Sterling School Foundation- Executive Director- Jim Spencer, SHS Principal- Jason Austin, and Athletic Director- Tyler Jakse. I am sure there others responsible for putting this tremendous display together. Congratulations to all involved- Sterling certainly can be proud of what they have.
Thanks for recognizing Musgrove Fieldhouse and Sterling athletics like you did. I hope the SHS athletes and coaches remember to NOT take it for granted.
