Sterling’s Musgrove Fieldhouse- Wow

When I coached, Musgrove FH was not my favorite place to play. In the large fieldhouse, the baskets were far from any walls and we never seemed to shoot well. The real problem was that Sterling’s teams were always well coached and their players always played hard.

As a fan, Musgrove FH is one of my favorite places to watch a game. The gym is impressive, and it is like attending a museum in their lobby area. I have gone to watch lots of college and high school games, and Sterling’s displays are second to nobody. Any administrator who is thinking about remodeling or updating their gym should go to Sterling for ideas.

Illinois Winningest Girls Basketball Programs

Totals thru 2023-4 seasons.

Thanks to Steve Allen from the IBCA for the work he does in tabulating schools and wins. If you believe your school should be on this list and is not, it is most likely because your school has not shared information with the IBCA or with the IHSA.

1- Marshall.    1189

2- Teutopolis   1177

3- Richwoods   1107

4- Carthage (Illini West)  1092

5- Whitney Young  1061

Strategy- 3 Man Delay

Three Guards Delay-
Pass guard to guard, then cut diagonally. The third guard is cutting up. If the defense stays to help, the guard is wide open for reverse. If #3’s defender does not stay to help, the cutter may be open inside.

David Arsenault Sr- Threes & Layups

For most of my years coaching girls basketball at Galesburg HS, we were an uptempo team that looked to fastbreak and to pressure full-court. The ultimate in uptempo basketball has been Grinnell College and Coach David Arsenault Sr. I have been intrigued with the Grinnell System for decades. While I was into uptempo, I hesitated to make the plunge into the "System." I finally instituted a version of the Grinnell System for about 5 season starting in 2009.

In my 50 years of coaching high school basketball, I never found any group more willing to share ideas and answer questions than the coaches working the "System." Perhaps it was in part because if you were running the "System," you had to stick together because many thought you were crazy and what you were doing was not sound.

Streaks & Colleges- Quiz

Galesburg High School has a rich history of girls and boys basketball. There have been many great players in Streaks history. This quiz looks at some of the Streaks greats who went onto play D1 basketball. Realize this is not intended to be a complete list, so there are players missing.

In today’s dollar, Galesburg basketball players have earned approximately $7,000,000 in D1 scholarships. When you add scholarships to D2 schools and jucos, the amount becomes even more.

I will list a Silver Streak player, your job is to list what D1 school they attended to play basketball. If they attended a juco first, still name the D1 school. If they attended multiple D1 schools, list the first they attended.

Please share your scores.

Friday Fotos- 1962 All-Star Game

We are in the middle of the cold winter, and thoughts of baseball season might warmup us up. Here are some pictures from the 1962 All-Star game that my family was able to attend, and a story about our experience meeting Warren Spahn and Eddie Matthews.

Western Big 6 Legends- 1981 Quincy

The 1981 Quincy Blue Devils dominated their way to an undefeated season, a state championship, and a national championship. When I say dominated, only three times did anyone come within 9 points of them. The Devils were coached by Jerry Leggett and assisted by Mike Hellenthal. They featured Bruce and Dennis Douglas, and Michael Payne.

Old School Coaches- Game Day

This Week’s Question

Being successful involves being organized. Every coach has approaches to game day- that day, pre-game, warmups, sideline management, timeouts, half-time, and post-game. What were some of the things that you felt were important to you on game day?

Unrivaled League Debut & WNBA Free Agency

The Unrivaled League made it's debut on this past Saturday. It is different than what we are used to see. With only three players on the floor, there is more space for players to show their skills. The rules of the league make it a very fan friendly league, but one that traditionalist will probably cringe to watch.

Coaching 101- Possessions and Tempo

As coaches, we look at lots of stats to analyze our team’s performance- FG%, Turnovers, Rebound %, Points Per Possession, and more. And we set goals with each of the stats to help teach our players how to analyze why we win and lose games.

A stat that we may not pay attention to, Possessions Per Game. Two important reasons for us to look at Possessions Per Game:

Scott Shaver- Coaching the World's Best HS Players

Scott Shaver graduated from Galesburg HS in 1979. He was a very successful high school player. My last year coaching boys basketball, he was brought up to the varsity as a sophomore at the end of the year. He turned out to play an important role in helping the Streaks advance to the Sectional. That team lost to Peoria High in OT, and the Lions went onto win the State Championship. Scott's senior year, the Streaks again won the Regional Championship. It was an exciting time to be a Silver Streaks because the gym was packed most nights.
