Jay Redfern- Silver Streak Insider

President Trump likes to refer to the “media” in a negative way, and to “fake news.” He has never met Jay Redfern. When you mention Jay Redfern in Galesburg, the Quad Cities, or Quincy, there is unanimous agreement that Jay stands for integrity, class, fairness, and hard work. He is an all-star in the newspaper business.

I learned important lessons about coaching and the media from George Lundeen and Jay Redfern. My first year as a cross country coach, Mr. Lundeen (the AD) came down to my class one morning because I hadn’t sent in my results to the Peoria paper. Lundeen said, “The team lost didn’t they?” When I confirmed it, he told me I needed to submit results whether we won or we lost.

Camellia- A Great Teammate

Camellia is a very good teammate- she gets it as far as supporting her team and her teammates. But I thought it would be better for an actual teammate to write about Camellia as a teammate.

The following was written by Kaylee Miller:

Camellia is such a good teammate because she is the definition of a good friend. I’ve always thought a good friend is someone who is kind, caring, and supportive of your successes. Camellia is just that; she is the person who would jump up and down for any small success you may have! She is a diligent worker in every aspect of her life, and that includes basketball.

Out of every teammate I’ve ever had, she is the most diligent person when it comes to watching film and being “game prepared.” She was always the person to have the film up before games or know exactly what the other teams plays were.
She is a great teammate because she leads by example. Even if Coach Massey or Coach Barshinger were not talking to her specifically, she would listen intently to improve her game as well.
She sets an example by doing the little things, like never taking shortcuts at a practice or in the weight room, keeping track of workouts in her streaks book (and working hard to meet those goals,) and giving it a 100% in practice no matter what.

There are a million good things to say about Camellia, but the most important is that she is a good teammate because she is genuine. She genuinely supports all other teammates and is always willing to put the team first, regardless of what it might mean for her stats or successes. She is the true definition of a team player!!

Mike Reynolds- Program Builder

Mike Reynolds has won at every stop in his coaching career. When he came to Galesburg, the Streaks had struggled in the 2000’s. There were coaches who said Galesburg was a bad job, things have changed, you can’t win there anymore. By the time Mike left Galesburg, he had turned things around. Galesburg won every year and they competed for Regional titles.

Mike was hired early in the spring, I had never met him. I was home for 6 weeks, recovering from hip replacement surgery. Ralph Henning (AD) and Tom Chiles (Principal) told Mike to call me with questions. I think Chiles words were, “All he does is sit around, he needs something to do.” So my introduction to Mike was Mike calling me afternoons with questions. I immediately could tell he was going to get after things.
