People on Speed Dial
Tom Keating… we weren’t in the same conference so we could share a lot of scouting type information. And he could definitely be a Volleyball doctor for any questions one might have.
My brother… different sports similar communities, could always compare ideas in terms of off-season program building, etc.
Best Advice
Bill Holmstrom “ is that the hill you want to die on?”
Also Bill: (after a loss) “your tongue lashing only goes so far - they know they lost. Give them one or two statistical or observable things to work on and get out of there.”

Loudelle Werling- HS PE teacher and Volleyball coach. She was in charge of our Student Leading program that really prepared and inspired me to be a HS PE teacher.
Mary Wise- My college coach at Iowa State for 3 years. She was tough, knowledgeable, and fair. I reached out to her several times with questions about coaching volleyball.
Diane Hill- Head vball coach at Bettendorf when I started there. I was the Sophomore coach for 2 years before taking over her role as Varsity coach. She was very helpful when I started my career.
People on Speed Dial for Coaching Help
Amy Baker- Volleyball Coach at Davenport North. I had a lot of respect for Amy. We competed against one another in some fierce battles but we also enjoyed spending time together. We played in a vball league, coached an Eastern Iowa All Star team together, went to clinics together, and I would reach out if I had questions.
Tom Keating- Volleyball Coach , Athletic Director at Dub. Wahlert when we first met. He has had several other roles since we coached. He was such a great resource, so knowledgeable, always willing to share ideas. We attended clinics and meetings together.

Best Games/Venues You Have Attended
March 18, 1982 - Bradley vs. Tulane (Robertson Memorial Field House / NIT Quarterfinals) The Braves won 77 - 61 to advance to Madison Square Garden. It was the most electric atmosphere ever! I had to camp out to get tickets for the sold out venue.
July 1, 1990 - White Sox vs. Yankees (Comiskey Park) It was a historic game, as Andy Hawkins of the Yankees threw a no hitter, but lost to Chicago 4 - 0.
July 11, 1990 - White Sox vs. Brewers (Comiskey Park = My last visit to my favorite ballpark.) “Turn Back the Clock” Game = 1917 uniforms, prices, technology, etc. My favorite ballpark day ever, even though Milwaukee won 12 - 9 in 13 innings.
December 16, 2012 - Vikings @ Rams (Edward Jones Dome) The Vikings won 36 - 22. It was the first Vikings game with my daughters! Adrian Peterson’s 82 yard touchdown run, which took place right in front of our end zone seats, was unforgettable.
October 9, 2016 - Vikings vs. Texans (U.S. Bank Stadium) My first trip to the new stadium with my daughters. Minnesota prevailed 31 - 13. It was Vikings “Alumni Weekend.” Over 100 former Vikings were in attendance, as Chris Carter was inducted into the “Ring of Honor.” The halftime “Legends Ceremony,” which featured dozens of my childhood idols was mesmerizing.
Mentors
Warren Applen, a decorated World War II veteran and mathematical instructor, who coached me in football, basketball, and track during my grade school years. My greatest example of dedication.
Andrew Bertram, my high school head football/track coach and social studies teacher, who probably had the greatest influence on both my career decision and coaching/teaching style. My greatest example of motivation.
Ronald Lowery another of my high school social studies teachers/coaches, who also happens to be my father-in-law, and, in my opinion, the greatest high school football/basketball scout in the history of the “pre-technology” era. My greatest example of organization.
People on Speed Dial for Coaching Advice
Football = Rod Butler, Doug Simper & Bob Easter (Three IHSFCA Hall of Fame legends, who taught me how to be a coach, during my student teaching at Peoria Richwoods.)
Basketball = Jerry Wilson & Mel Casper ( I was Jerry’s assistant for the Lewistown girls, while Mel was the head boys coach. They molded me, a “football guy,” into a basketball coach. They always provided great advice. They are both in the IBCA Hall of Fame.)
Best Advice
Dunlap Head Football Coach, Andrew Bertram, instructed me, along with my teammates, why it was important to never assume. He wrote “ASSUME” on the chalk board, and explained why we should never make an “ASS” out of “U” and “ME.” The lesson stuck.
