What were your favorite classes/teachers at GHS?
My favorite classes were PE with Mr. Peck and Outdoor Living!
What are some of your favorite memories from high school?
Some of my favorite memories from GHS are Friday night football games, boys’ and girls’ basketball games, and sitting on the ledge before school with all my friends.
What did you do after graduation?
After graduation, I attended Illinois Central College for two years and earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education. I then played one year of basketball at Purdue Calumet, but at that point I was burned out and needed a break from both basketball and school.
What have you done in your career?
I moved to Bloomington, IL, and worked as a daycare teacher. I loved being a “terrible two’s” teacher — no toddler room for me! Later, I moved back to Galesburg and became a Special Education Associate, a role I loved and worked in for over 15 years.
In 2015, I went back to school and earned my bachelor’s degree in Education, along with my Special Education Certificate to teach in Texas. We lived in Texas for 10 years before transferring back with Eric’s job. For the past five years, we’ve lived in Waukee, IA, where I now work for iJag (Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates). In this role, I help students explore their futures — from finding employment to discovering career paths after high school. We expose students to different opportunities while also encouraging them to give back to the community.
What are you up to these days?
I’ve been married to Eric Szalo for 17 years, and we’ve been together for 25 years. We have two daughters: Maryne, 18, a senior who is working on narrowing down her college options to continue her basketball career. She hopes to become a veterinarian (and fill her house with animals!). Adelyne, our 8th grader, plays volleyball, basketball, and softball — though basketball is her favorite. She’s our happy-go-lucky, people-loving kid who reminds me so much of her Aunt Sarah.
