What was your favorite class (classes), favorite teacher (teachers)?
Surprisingly Math was one of my favorite subjects in school and I genuinely loved taking AP Calculus with Mrs. Kniker. It was a very challenging and work-load heavy course as it spanned over the course of a full school calendar year, but I feel like the competitive side in me loves a challenge. Not only did Mrs. Kniker teach that course on a college level, but it in fact did give me 8 college credits after passing the AP exam. She was the best to learn from.
If we want to talk about least favorite teachers though, I did take Psychology at the high school and that teacher was something else…. Thank goodness he is retired now! (Note- This is Casey’s humor, taking a jab at her HS coach.)
What are a few of your favorite memories from GHS?
Playing Varsity Girls Basketball at Galesburg High School for 4 years is overall my favorite memory. The connections I made with all the teammates and coaches, the leadership skills I learned, the trips and tournaments we went to, the communities support, and of course all of the free T-Shirts over the years. There is so much to take away from being a part of that experience. I have cherished those memories over the years and forever will. After meeting so many women in college that did not get same high school experience that I did, I’m extremely grateful for what I was apart of.
What did you do right after high school?
After high school, I committed to Benedictine University to be a student-athlete on the division 3 level. I was able to complete 4 additional years of basketball on the women’s basketball team. I ended up majoring in Psychology (despite the insane teacher I had in high school). I graduated the most winning Senior class in school history at the time and my senior year we set the school and conference record for 3’s made in a game at 21.
Where and what did you do for a career?
Currently, I work at my Alma Mater Benedictine University in the Admissions Department. While working here I was able to complete my Master of Science in Management and Organizational Behavior. I do not know where that will lead me next at this time in my career. However, after being here for over 5 years I do still love my job and working with students to make college become a reality. It is a very rewarding job!
What are you up to these days?
Right now I live in Lisle, IL with my brother Garret as my roommate and his dog Rocco. We have a great dynamic where I yell at him for not doing things around the house and he makes up for it by buying me food. After college I met my boyfriend Christian who is from Naperville, IL. Christian surprisingly LOVES coming to Galesburg and it his favorite thing to tell people about. If you do not know anything about Naperville it is definitely the complete opposite of Galesburg. I have been playing in a women’s basketball league every spring and it is a lot of fun, but every year it tends to be a humbling experience. Other than that, just enjoying life with family and friends as much as I can!
What advice would you have for today’s Silver Streak athletes?
Embrace where you come from and embrace the journey and leave a positive mark. Whether or not you continue to be an athlete in the future there are so many valuable life lessons to learn from playing a sport. Not only is it a great way to build soft skills, but it is also an amazing network to have for your future. I know I could reach out to Coach Massey and my college Coach whenever I needed something, and they would be able to speak positively on my behalf. The main reason I have the job I do know is because of the help I got from my college coach. At the end of the day, just have fun!
