What was your favorite class (classes), favorite teacher (teachers)?
Mr. People’s …woodworking class
What are a few of your favorite memories from GHS?
The first time I came out of the tunnel hearing the band playing, smelling the popcorn, and looking across the court seeing my mother and grandmother in their season ticket seats right under the WGIL sign cheering me on with tears in their eyes. I remember thinking about the 2 min and 38 secs I played the entire season just 3 years prior in my 7th grade season and know I as about to start my first varsity game as a sophomore for my Galesburg Silver Streaks! I looked back at Coach Mason (my uncle) and told him that I was not going to disappoint myself or my family.
What did you do right after high school?
Played 2 years at Lincoln Jr. College then a year at Loyola University of Chicago.
Where and what did you do for a career?
Illinois Department Corrections (28 years this Sept.), after getting hurt on the job I relocated to Peoria and after a few years I got back into coaching at Dunlap HS before leaving to become the athletic director at Quest Charter Academy in Peoria. I was the AD for 10 years before retiring again.
Share as much as you want of what you are doing now.
My wife (Kertrina) & I are a blended family of 6 (3 boys 3 girls) and 9 grandchildren. Just built our home in Chillicothe. Enjoying retirement waiting to see what to do next in this chapter of my life.
What advice would you have for today’s Silver Streak athletes?
Wear that jersey with pride. Work hard when no one’s watching, stay coachable, and lift up your teammates. Remember, success isn’t just about wins, it’s about character, discipline, and resilience. Balance the classroom with the court, and enjoy every moment along the way. These days will fly by, but the lessons and memories will last a lifetime. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE BEING A SILVER STREAK!!!
