Streaks Basketball Alums: Scott Shaver 1979

Scott Shaver (GHS Class of 1979)

What are some of your favorite memories?

Playing in front of a huge crowd, the Western Big 6 was great competition, Quincy was rated #1 in the state,  East Moline was rated #2, (we beat East Moline pretty soundly), we almost beat Quincy at Quincy!  Also memorable was coming out of the locker room and hearing the band play, the crowd, and you felt like you could jump out of the gym. Also breaking the backboard at GHS, dunking!  (I still have some of the glass!) I made lifelong friends from GHS. A special memory for me was when I was inducted into the GHS Athletic HOF.

What did you do after graduating from GHS?

Right after HS I went to Monmouth College and played for 4 years. When I left, I was top 5 in scoring and rebounding in school history.

What did you do for your career?

I was in education and coaching in AZ for 35+ years. Two of my college teammates moved to the PHX area and we played together for several years. Our team was sponsored by Pepsi and we played in several local tournaments, pro-ams, college tournaments, 3 on 3's, and were very successful. We beat the Canadian National team, and, at the time, I didn't realize how special that was until I ran into one of the starters-David Turcotte--at the Dream Team Tournament of the Americas in Portland in '92.

What are you up to now?

I am still living in AZ and am supporting the Dream City Christian program. I really enjoy helping kids out:  teaching them how to drive, picking them up at the airport, helping them with their college decisions, having a positive impact on kids, many of whom are from countries all around the world, just being someone they can depend on when reviewing their NIL contracts, and being a father figure.

What advice would you have for current Streaks athletes?

Have fun--enjoy it because it goes fast. Playing basketball was fun, and we played wherever we could, whenever we could.  Always be coachable.  It's very exciting have a Thiel as basketball coach again! I wish him and all Silver Streak programs nothing but the best. I try to keep up with them as much as I can.
