Photo Essay: Celebrating Women’s Basketball Boom

Women’s basketball is in a very good place. There has been a real boom in interest in women’s basketball in the last few years.

The Seattle Storm just honored the role that Sue Bird played in this growth of popularity in women’s basketball. The Storm dedicated a statue to honor Sue Bird.

It is exciting to see young boys and girls looking up to WNBA and College Women as idols. There was a clip of a little girl crying in excitement to get autographed shoes from JuJu Watkins. Another story about a little girls bringing her A’ja Wilson doll to be autographed. And picture after picture of young girls and boys excitedly getting autographs.

My guess is that 10 years ago it would have been tough to find jerseys or t-shirts of your favorite WNBA star. Now you see thousands of jerseys/t-shirts with player’s names and numbers.

There are many books written on women players and coaches, which serve to inspire.

The thirst for information on women’s basketball is shown by all of the podcasts on women’s basketball.

I hope the interest in women’s basketball continues on the high school, college, and pro level continues. The excitement is inspiring young girls and young boys to dream!
