This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

100 Years Ago- 1926

Charles Stewart interviews women at the National Women’s Party. He wants to know what political offices that these women feel women will be able to fill. Stewart feels that while women may be elected to the House of Representatives or Senate, that the only way a woman could ever become President would be to become Vice-President and have the President die. 

75 Years Ago- 1951

Not many options on TV- two channels. The choices were WOC (NBC) or WHBF (CBS). Some of the program options included- Perry Como, Roller Derby, Meet the Press, Red Skelton, Howdy Doody, and Gene Autry. 

50 Years Ago- 1976

Galesburg’s teachers and the District #205 School Board can’t reach an agreement on a new contract, but the teacher’s are in conflict with each other. The Galesburg Education Association was the negotiating group for the teachers but a second organization, the Galesburg Federation of Teachers was unhappy with the chief negotiator of the GEA. Things were not going well, and we will see that things did not end well. 

30 Years Ago- 1996

You can’t beat the combination of alcohol and karaoke. Northgate Lounge, connected to the Northgate Bowling Alley offered both the alcohol and the karaoke. 

20 Years Ago- 2006

Galesburg and UTHS were both coming off bad losses the week before. Despite UT being 0-6, Coach Wes Olson didn’t want his Streaks to be over confident. 

10 Years Ago- 2016

GHS grad, Will Anderson had developed a smartphone app to help with concession lines. GHS Athletic Director, Jeff Flater put the app to work at a home football game. Over 50 fans used the app and it received raves.
