“This Week in Galesburg History”
Five day or six day work week is the question.
GHS’s Girls Service League has inductions.
Streaks girls golf takes third in State- AGAIN!
Girls tennis players headed to State.
Amtrak’s Carl Sandburg is up and running.
Noah Benbow going to State.
This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?
“This Week in Galesburg History” appears on Mondays on the WGIL website and the Massey Basketball Blog.

A statistician for the Labor Department claims his research indicates that workers are producing as much in a five day week as they used to in a six day week. The conclusion is that the five day week is not just a short-term experiment of Henry Ford.

Galesburg High School’s Girls Service League had their induction ceremonies. The GSL was involved in helping girls transition into GHS and perform service to the school and community. The GSL in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s each year had 40 to 60 girls as members.

For the second year in a row, the Streaks girls golf team took third in the State of Illinois. Coach Mary Campagna’s team included Sandi Owen, Cindi Gunther, Marj Heaton, Kerry Coe, Tracey Mendrek, and Sue Douglas were member of the team. Although the two golf teams finished in 3rd in State, the IHSA did not award them a State Trophy, and GHS has not inducted either team into their athletic Hall of Fame.
30 Years Ago- 1996
Three girls tennis players from GHS are headed to State. If a player finished in the top four in either singles or doubles at the Sectionals, they advance to State. After the Friday competition, Kristin Gaus (singles), and Katie Koeppen and Stacey Gaus (doubles) had advanced to the semi-finals in the Sectionals. Kristin Gaus was the #1 seed in the Sectionals, and this was her third trip to State.

The Carl Sandburg line on Amtrak started up. While Galesburg had service to Chicago before this time, this was a line starting in Chicago and coming thru Galesburg on its way to Quincy in the morning. This would enable someone from Chicago to come to Galesburg in the morning and return to Chicago that evening.

GHS golfer, Noah Benbow is headed to State. He shot a six over par 77. Benbow had finished 7th at State the year before.
