St. Louis great in final appearance.

Volleyball has last home match of a great year.

This is a look back at the history of Galesburg (and the world). What was going on 100 years ago, 75 years ago, 50 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, and 10 years ago this week?

“This Week in Galesburg History” appears on Mondays on the WGIL website and the Massey Basketball Blog.

100 Years Ago- 1926

Red Grange appears in the movie One Minute to Play, and it is playing at the Orpheum Theater. Plus the Orpheum is also having “high class vaudeville attractions.

75 Years Ago- 1951

Sears has a sale where you can buy a 17” silvertone TV for only $188.35.

50 Years Ago- 1976

Galesburg football under Coach Kelly Kane clinches the WB6 title. This was GHS’s first conference football title since 1967 in the Illini Conference. The Streaks came back vs Rocky after trailing 12-0, to win 18-12. Dean McKillip scored all three TD’s.

30 Years Ago- 1996

Cardinal legend, Ozzie Smith finished is 19 year career. For his last at bat, he fouled out when pinch hitting in a play-off game vs. the Braves.

20 Years Ago- 2006

The Streaks volleyball team played their last home game of the season. The Streaks won over 20 games, and set a school record for most wins in a season.

10 Years Ago- 2016

After a summer storm damaged the floor in Thiel Gym, major repairs to the floor and the bleachers took place. A community committee was set up to pick a design for the floor. The committee voted to retain the traditional lightning bolt at center court and add a stain to the floor to give it distinction.
