Like all coaches, I wanted to cover every possible late game situation with my players because I knew if we had covered it in practice that we were more likely to be successful in the game situation. My problems were:
1- In practice it seemed like it took 10 minutes to set up one last game situation, and then there would still be a player who would say, “I thought we were ahead.”
Solution- Have an assistant or manager who is trained to put the situation on the scoreboard. The players need to be trained how you want them to read the scoreboard- (light jersey team is home, dark jersey is away), time outs, score, fouls, and possession are on the board. Each team has a 30 second time out. The head coach just says- Black ball on the sideline. NOTHING else should need to be explained.
2- I seldom had an organized list of late game situations so I would get to the day before the first game and realize there were at least 20 late game situations that I had not covered.
Solution- Have a list of situations to go thru. If you follow the suggestion in #1, you can probably cover 3-4 situations per days in 7-8 minutes.
3- When a late game situation came up, I would realize that we had covered this situation but not with my team on defense.
Solution- An easy way to deal with this is to just repeat each situation twice. Flip offense and defense each time.
