Regionals- Jane Miller's View

Regional seedings and pairings were decided on last week and it won’t be long before we find out if the voters were correct in their choices.
The most competitive regional in the Washington Sectional looks to be the one at Bloomington Central Catholic.
Morton (22-4), which is on a 10-game winning streak, earned the No. 1 seed over the hosts, even though BCC (20-3) is ranked fifth in the Class 3A state poll and the Potters are sixth.
No. 3 seed Normal U-High, which beat Richwoods last week, also is receiving votes in the state poll.
Washington, with a 15-7 record, is seeded fourth. Bloomington and Metamora round out the field.

Senior Week- Sabrina's Look

Senior Night this week vs. UTHS on Thursday. Time goes by pretty fast. We have a great group of six senior players and two senior managers. They have represented their school and community so well. I asked the underclassmen to talk about the seniors…

This is from Sabrina.

Who is a senior you really did not know going into the season but have really got to know them this season?
Going into the season I really didn't know Dani Teel but now I have really gotten to know her this season.

Senior Week- Chloe Anderson

I asked each of them to reflect on their basketball careers. As I receive their replies, I will post them.

This is from Chloe Anderson.

When you were younger, was there a male or female player you watched who inspired you? What was it about them or their game that drew your attention?

My mom always used to play basketball with me and coach my YMCA basketball teams. She really inspired me because she used to play and it was something we could have fun doing together. All my brothers and I used to play pig and around the world in the driveway so I wanted to play to be with my brothers too. Lastly, watching my two older cousins, Claire and Lia, play Girls' Varsity Basketball for the Streaks really inspired me to further pursue playing basketball.

When I was younger, I always watched Illinois basketball (obviously) and for some reason I just loved Corey Bradfort.

Who is a senior you really did not know going into the season but have really got to know them this season?
I was never really close to Jess. But since summer I learned how fun, outgoing and nice she really is. She is also hard working and I admire that

Senior Week- Lexi's Look

Who is a senior you really did not know going into the season but have really got to know them this season?
Coming into this year, I knew of Dani Teel but I'd never really had a true conversation with her. Throughout the season I've really gotten to know, as well as become friends with her.

Senior Week- Allison Mangieri

When I was younger, I looked up to Libby White. For some reason, I was obsessed with her haha.  She gave me her number at one of the camps and told me to call her if I wanted to go shoot around at the YMCA with her.  I was always too scared to call her because I didn't want to embarrass myself!

Senior Week- Jessica Lieber

A basketball player I always looked up to was Deron Williams! I learned a lot of things from watching him on tv and mostly in person! The way he handled the ball and was a leader to his team really inspired me!

Kansas Weekend

Not often have a break in the middle of basketball season. But after two weekends in a row with 2 games on Saturdays, our schedule gave the girls and the coaches the weekend to freshen up for the stretch run. When I saw this coming over a month ago, I made some calls. Everything worked out and we were headed to KU.

So Friday evening, my brother Mark, Allen, and myself headed to Lawrence Kansas. We picked up nephew Evan in Osceola, Iowa. From there we headed down to KU. The total trip took us about 6 1/2 hours. We arrived in Lawrence at 1:45am. After a short rest, we were up and headed to the University Bookstore on campus. I cannot say how much we spent for fear my wife will find out. Let's just say we were good customers.

Kansas

Saturday no Streaks basketball games- but I am getting to go to a basketball game. My brother and I, along with our sons are headed to Lawrence, Kansas. We are going to Allen Field House for the Kansas vs. Oklahoma game. It will be one thing to check off my bucket list.

Senior Night

Believe it or not- Senior Night is this coming Thursday vs. UTHS at Thiel Gym.

We will be honoring 8 seniors- 6 players and 2 managers. They have had a huge impact on the Streaks basketball program.

Jen Main and Becca Ladner have been managers for most of their high school career.

Sharron Diggins, Allison Mangieri, Chloe Anderson, and Dani Teel have been regulars for the varsity team the last two years but played some as sophs.

Rainee Sibley and Jessica Lieber have been regulars on the varsity the last three years.

They are a group that has worked hard and been a great model to our younger players.

Big Night

Last night there were things which went wrong for us, but there were also things that went right for us. We had many players who battled, didn't give up, and almost came back to beat one of the top 4A teams on their home floor. Unfortunately we gave up too much ground early and could not make it up. But the players all kept battling and they all supported each other whether they were playing or not playing.

One of the real highlights of the night was the performance of sophomore, Sabrina Clay. Sabrina had 13 points (perfect from the field), and battled the bigger Rocky players for 15 rebounds. To put that in perspective, I believe we have only had 4 other individuals who ever got that many rebounds in one game-- HUGE number.

Stepping Up in Lockeroom

The following is part of a story from the Wisconsin State Journal. It is a story of a player wanting to take on a leadership role. It is the story of a non-vocal player who realized her team needed her to be vocal.

Too often freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can at a certain point in the season take the attitude of--- "wait until next year." This is a story of a junior who recognizes the importance of taking advantage of this year, and the fact "next year is not guaranteed."

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team has a laundry list of needs: A consistent third scorer, better rebounding, fewer turnovers, increased production off the bench.
Junior center Cassie Rochel is looking for all those things and something else: She wants everyone to stop thinking about tomorrow.

What Kind of Player Are You?

I read an interesting comment on twitter. They said each player should figure out what kind of player they are....

Which player are you?

Does your coach want you to shoot? or Does the other team's coach want you to shoot?

You Make the Call

Several weeks ago, we had a game where the following happened....

1- The ball went out of bounds off of a Moline player. The ref signalled it was Galesburg's ball.

2- Galesburg was subbing five players so there was confusion or at least a pause in the action.

Supper Club

I got the following report on tonight's team dinner....

They consumed 7 lbs. of Italian beef, 1 1/2 pans of cheesy hash brown potatoes,  1  1/2 bags of salad,  3/4 pan of Cherry Dump Cake, and 3 dozen chocolate chip cookies. The Eisele's Labradoodle, Bella, circled under the table to pick up anything they dropped.  They got goody bags which started out containing healthy protein items like peanuts and granola bars, but had candy bars, cookies, crazy straws, sparkly lip gloss, and sunglasses added.

Streaks over Q

From the Quincy Whig....

By JOSH RIZZO
Herald-Whig Sports Writer
The Quincy High School girls basketball team's momentum went crashing to the floor along with Galesburg's Dani Teel.
A 3-pointer by Arai'ya Dade capped a 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter and cut the Silver Streaks' lead to five points with 4 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in Thursday night's Western Big Six Conference showdown.
A couple of possessions later, the Blue Devils' Jordan Fletcher was tied up battling for a rebound and was whistled for a foul. As the players untangled, Fletcher knocked Teel to the floor, leading to a technical foul on the Quincy center as Teel stayed on the floor while being attended to by trainers.
Teel left shortly thereafter with an injury, while Quincy's momentum was completely gone.

Having a Plan

I read an interesting article in the Madison paper talking to the new Wisconsin defensive backs coach. He talked about what he believes will be a strength of the new Badger football coach- Gary Anderson. His basic message is that Anderson has a "plan." A "plan" for what? A "plan" for everything- things are not just haphazard and done on the fly- whether it is the weight room, the practice plans, discipline- there is a plan.

I have been fortunate to observe a lot of good coaches at GHS, compete vs good coaches, watch practices of good coaches, and attend clinics with good coaches. As I have got older, it is clear to me that the best coaches have thought it all out- they have a plan.

The Streaks have a busy and challenging weekend.

Big Brother Retiring

My brother Mark who has taught and coached in Clinton for 39 years turned in his letter to retire. Our family is certainly proud of him. He has been a good big brother. He has done a good job giving me confidence when I needed it and criticism when called for.

He supported me when I was an athlete, and we have counseled each other during our teaching and coaching careers. There has been a lot of time spent on the phone.

I would like to say I have enjoyed watching his successful volleyball teams play- but the sport makes me too nervous. Good things and bad things seem like they happen too quickly in volleyball. And I don't like watching and wanting the River Queens to win but not having any control. It is a stroke waiting to happen.

Congrats on a good teaching career!! We are all proud of you!

The following is from Mark's facebook page....

This statement has been released in conjunction with my acceptance of district's early retirement pckg. "I have tremendously enjoyed my 39yrs teaching & coaching in the Clinton School District & I hope to be able to continue to serve the community and the school district in a variety of capacities. As AJ Hanafan might have said, “I'll always be a wildcat and a River King.”
Both of my children are CHS grads. I've worked with many wonderful families, assistant coaches & administrators. The students/athletes I've had a chance to work with have been & are fantastic. I’ve always been appreciative of the confidence that Bill Holmstrom showed in me, way back in June, 1978. I think that we've built a solid program that the community & school can be proud of since then. “Do I plan on coaching in the future?” …. “I think I still may have quite a bit of coaching in me.”

Streaks Split on Saturday

Galesburg started the morning out with a nice win over Peoria Central. The Streaks jumped to a 20+ lead in the first half, and then coasted to the win. It was a great opportunity for some of our players to play more shifts than usual and to play the entire fourth quarter.

Particularly impressive was Dani Teel. Dani exploded for a career high 15 points on 5-6 field goals and 5-6 from the line. It is great to see a player who plays as hard as Dani have such a good game.

Central is a team which lost to Manual in a close game earlier this year- Manual the same team we lost to. So while Central does not have as strong of a record as usual, it was nice to the Streaks play such a dominate game.

Streaks over Moline

From the Argus....

Through an uncharacteristic 7-15 girls' basketball season for the Moline Maroons, Coach Steve Ford knows that their schedule has brought them a lot of tough games with a lot of tough outcomes.

Maybe the toughest to swallow, though, was Thursday night, a 58-49 Western Big 6 Conference loss at Wharton Field House to the Galesburg Silver Streaks.

In particular, the last one minute and 42 seconds of the game.

That was when the Maroons -- who had frustrated Galesburg by getting the better of them on defense and on the boards -- stepped to the line after a technical-foul whistle on the Streaks' leader, Jessica Lieber.

Thiel Gym- Lots of Memories

Even Willow likes Thiel Gym.
Thiel Gym has provided a lot of memories for many people in Galesburg. Galesburg over Richwoods in boys bb in 1976. Galesburg over PND in girls bb for the Sectional title in 1995. The list of great games could go on. If you asked a sports fan in Galesburg, they could all name different games with exciting memories.

I have been to many games in Thiel Gym. I am not sure but I am guessing I have spent more time watching practices and games in Thiel Gym than anyone. And I am not sure that is really something the average person would be impressed with. The reality is that Thiel Gym has given me a lot of memories besides just the games and practices.

Streaks Rated #10

Galesburg is ranked #10 in the Illinois AP rankings. This is the 18th year that GHS has been ranked in the top ten in Illinois. This is the 16th time in the last 21 years GHS has been ranked in the top ten. Perhaps more impressive, Galesburg has been ranked in the top twenty in Illinois in 25 of the last 27 years. The highest rankings for the Streaks has been #1 which was achieved in 1997 and 1999.

It is interesting that 9 of our 30 regular season games will be played vs. teams ranked in 4A and 3A. 3 of our losses are vs. ranked 4A teams.

Massey Coaching College

Brother Mark when he coached Mt.St. Clair in the 1970's. In this picture
complete with leisure suit. He definitely took a relaxed approach to things.
I remember the games I attended, he always had a bag of popcorn on the
bench. They travelled to away games by vans and cars. And yes, being a '60's
guy, Mark had a volkswagen van to take the majority of the team on the road.

Which do you like best?

Will a College Find You?

Everyone wants options. When we pick out a new car, we want options. When we go out to eat, we like to have more than one thing on the menu.

For my high school students, I try to talk to them a lot about they need to be creating options. My intent is they work hard as a student, take demanding classes- so when they get ready for college they have options. They can choose a college and not be as limited.

The same is true for high school athletes. Some of them want to continue to play in college. If they have  a good work ethic and develop their skills- they can have an opportunity to continue playing whether at a junior college, D3, D2, or D1 level.

Register Mail- Streak over Alleman

A big second quarter helped the Galesburg High School girls basketball team in its 73-65 victory over Rock Island Alleman on Thursday night in a Western Big 6 contest at John Thiel Gymnasium.
“We did a good job of mixing it up defensively,” said Streaks senior guard Allison Mangieri, who finished with eight points. “We went out with a lot of intensity. We knew they were capable of coming back. We stuck together and played as a team.”
The Silver Streaks (12-5, 3-2) were down 16-13 after the first eight minutes of action, but Galesburg outscored the Pioneers (9-8, 0-5) 28-17 in the second quarter for a 41-33 lead at the half.
“Alleman always frustrates us with their half-court defense, but we had much better composure than we have against them,” Silver Streaks coach Evan Massey said. “We didn’t get frustrated and make bad choices.”
“I’m not happy with the outcome on the scoreboard, but I don’t have a problem with the effort,” Alleman coach Jay Hatch said. “We battled. We gave up 41 in the first half, but hung in there. Except for the scoreboard, I’m happy with a lot of the things we did tonight.”
Alleman opened up the second quarter with a basket from post Erin Morrisey with 7:40 before the half. However, the Pioneers didn’t score again until 4:05 left in the second thanks to a basket from Anne Bohnert.

Sorry Willow

GALESBURG — How well did the Galesburg girls' basketball team play in its first game of 2013?

Two Alleman starters had career nights — point guard Anna Wetherell with 13 assists and center Erin Morrisey with 29 points — and the Streaks still pulled away to a 73-65 Western Big 6 Conference victory on Thursday night.

With the game tied at 44 and the Streaks having their fill of the Wetherell-to-Morrisey feed, the Streaks played one of their own season's best stretches to close out the third quarter with a 15-6 run on their way to victory. Galesburg (12-6, 3-2 the WB6) hit 21-of-24 free throws for the game and were 7-of-8 in the second half.

"The kids stepped up," Galesburg coach Evan Massey said of the foul-line accuracy. "Sometimes it's all about who shoots them."
