Parents Playbook- Don’t Be That Parent

Last night, the Indiana Pacers had an unbelievable comeback to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 119-118 to win the first round series 4-1. When the Bucks led by 7 with only 40 seconds to go, ESPN probability set the odds of a Milwaukee win at 97.8%.

A couple threes by the Pacers, paired with a couple turnovers by the Bucks set up Indiana with the ball with about 10 seconds to go. Indiana purposely set up their 25 years old guard, Tyrese Haliburton to go off a ball screen. Tyrese got a step, turned the corner, and layed it in with about 1 second to go.

Classic- 1997 Galesburg vs Taylorville (Tom Loewy)

In 1997, Galesburg and Taylorville met in the semi-finals of the IHSA State Tourney. Both teams were undefeated, Galesburg ranked #2 and Taylorville ranked #3.

Both communities have proud basketball traditions. Taylorville and Dolph Stanley had been a state power in the 1940’s in boys basketball. Galesburg and John Thiel had been a power in the 1960’s in boys basketball.

In 1997 both communities were out in huge numbers to support their girls basketball teams. The result was largest crowd in IHSA girls basketball history, and the largest attended girls basketball State Tourney.

On Jan. 30, 2015 in the Galesburg Register-Mail, Tom Loewy looked back at this memorable matchup, and how that game impacted an historic run by the Silver Streaks as they won a State Record, 9 straight Sectional Championships.

Players Playbook- Chuck Noll on Leadership

Chuck Noll was a legendary coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the only coach in NFL history to win four Super Bowls. His Steelers won in 1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980.

We can learn a lot if we listen to the words of champions.

Chuck Noll had the following to way about leadership:

Quiz- 1964 HS, College, Pro Sports

This is a test of high school, college, and pro sports in 1963-1964. There will be 25 questions, test yourself.

21-25- You are old and you are a sports fan too.
16-20- You are a sports fan but not old yet.
11-15- Watch more ESPN so maybe you will do better on this quiz in 2050.
10 and under- I don’t think you are on the right blog.

Players Playbook- Championship Motivation

One of the most dominant sports teams in America has been the North Carolina Women’s Soccer Team. Under Coach Anson Dorrance, North Carolina won 20 of 22 ACC championships, and 20 of 28 NCAA championships.

Coach Dorrance was asked what motivates championship teams and championship athletes.

Inside Hoops- Building Man to Man Culture

Early in my career, the varsity players did not have much basketball training before they got to high school. They had not played in the YMCA, they had not gone to camps when young, and most had not even had JH experience.

I knew I wanted to have my teams play man to man defense, but early I made an horrible mistake. I looked at everything that I thought needed to be taught, and decided that teaching man to man to the first teams would be too much. So I took the easy route. Although we pressed some 1-2-1-1 and some 2-2-1, our primary defense was to sit in a 2-3 zone. It was not a 2-3 “matchup”, it was a straight zone. As a player had never played 2-3, I knew nothing about it, we just sat in a 2-3 zone.

Classic- 1964 Galesburg vs Corpus Christi

The 1963-64 Corpus Christi team had a very good year, going 19-5 on the season. They were coached by Rex Davis, who was in his second year. His first year they had gone 15-10.

Key players were Pat Prina, Jim Kennedy, John Noonan, Mike Hanrahan, Jim Kemmer, and Bob Scott. They took second in the Little Six Conference, won the Knox County Tourney, and earned the #2 seed in the Galesburg Regional. Other team members were Mike Prina, Bob Calderone, Mike Rice, Bob Scott, and Craig Wilke.

Friday Fotos- Steve Davis with Coach Reynolds (2015)

This is one of my all-time favorite sports pictures. It was taken by Steve Davis in 2015. It is one of those rare times that a photographer catches Coach Reynolds with look of intensity during a game- he doesn’t look happy.

The student fans think what they are doing is funny. Two people on the bench- Allen Massey and Matt Pogue have been around Coach Reynolds enough that they know it is not a time to smile.

X/O’s- False Action into Zone Lob

All of us probably have some kind of “trick play” that we love to set up. It can be a backdoor, a fake handoff, a lob, or backscreen. The problem is that if we use these “trick plays” too often, no one is ever tricked. And often if we just go down the floor and go right into this play, the defense sees it coming.

A great idea is to run one of your regular sets as a “false action.” Pick out something that you use a lot. You run this action again for maybe the 15th time in a game, but in the middle of it or at the end of it, you go into your “trick play.” Often the defense is caught off guard- they are busy defending your false action.

In 2003, Amanda Gunther was a 5’8” All-State post player. We lost to Fenwick in the Elite. On our run to State, Gunther was averaging close to 25ppg and we as a team were scoring only 55ppg. Amanda had a knack of catching the lob and either scoring over some 6’2” posts or drawing fouls. Vs. Fenwick, we wanted to slow the game down, so we might run our basic zone reversal action 4-5 times and then run this lob action for Gunther. She had a big game and kept us close but eventually we lost.

Streaks Scrapbook- Reynolds Revitalizes The Streaks

Mike Reynolds had a very successful run at Galesburg HS as basketball coach for eleven years from 2008-9 season thru 2018-9 season.

Before arriving at Galesburg, Reynolds had been an assistant coach at UTHS and Danville before taking over as head coach at Bismarck- Henning.

Reynolds was coach at Bismarck for 5 years with an overall record of 118-38 for a 76% winning percentage. His last two seasons, they were 55-7 for a whopping 89% winning percentage.

X/O’s- False Action into Backdoor

All of us probably have some kind of “trick play” that we love to set up. It can be a backdoor, a fake handoff, a lob, or backscreen. The problem is that if we use these “trick plays” too often, no one is ever tricked. And often if we just go down the floor and go right into this play, the defense sees it coming.

A great idea is to run one of your regular sets as a “false action.” Pick out something that you use a lot. You run this action again for maybe the 15th time in a game, but in the middle of it or at the end of it, you go into your “trick play.” Often the defense is caught off guard- they are busy defending your false action.

I am not saying to use my false action, pick out something in your playbook to use. Draw it out and then see how you add one of your tricks at the end.

Players Playbook- What Colleges Look For

Being retired this winter, one of the real joys was to time and freedom to watch different high school teams and players. I had the opportunity to watch games in person and also on Hudl.

I saw some great teams and great players in downstate Illinois, in the Chicago suburbs, in Iowa, and in Oklahoma. I saw players committed and/or recruited by schools in the Big 12, ACC, SEC, MVC, and Big Ten.

When you are not stressing about how to guard a great player, it is fun to just enjoy watching the great things- team work, hustle, offensive skills, athleticism and more.

There are many high school players who have dreams of becoming recruited to play college basketball. What are college coaches looking for?

Streaks Scrapbook- 2000 Streaks by Tom Loewy

Tom Loewy covered sports in Galesburg, and then did feature stories. He wrote and wrote and wrote. He would cover the Galesburg girls basketball and then it seemed every area basketball game too.

He was from Peoria, where he went to Richwoods High School. Then he went to Beloit College. He was lured to Galesburg by work at Knox College by Harley Knosher.

Tom was not a good sportswriter, he was a great sportswriter. The characteristics that made him great were:

1- He was thorough. I can picture Tom in a Beloit English class having a professor telling him,”Just get one more source.”

2- He realized that although he was covering a basketball game, the story was not about basketball, it was about the people playing basketball.

3- While he is a great writer, he is an even better listener. He let the “people playing the game” tell him the story.

4- He was curious. He always had one more question. He wanted to make sure he understood what the person was saying.

From the 2000 girls basketball season, here are some samples of his writing.

Inside Hoops- 5 Tips To Build Shooters

#1- Analysis of Your Team
Looking back on your playing rotation last year-
How many of your players could not shoot 30% from three?
How many of your players were not a threat to score from fifteen feet?

Next year, the teams you will need to beat to win your conference and win the Sectonal-
How many three point threats will they play in their rotation?
How many players will they play who cannot consistently make an open 15 foot shot?

Next year-
How many players can you have on the floor if they cannot make open fifteen foot shots?
How many players do you need on the floor who can make a three?

Inside Hoops- Stat Ways To Analyze Players

Jerry Leggett Team Value Points-
Many coaches have adapted some form of the stat evaluation similar to what Jerry Leggett first used in the 1980’s. His scoring system involved each stat being given a value- FGM 2, 3M 3, Assist 2, O-Reb 2, D-Reb 1, Steal 2, Draw Charge +2, FGMiss -1, 3 Miss -1, Turnover -2.

Some coaches then grade players on defense and give them plus/minus for some of the areas.

Leggett always left one spot on his varsity tourney team to be filled by the player off the FS team who had the highest TV score.

Streaks Scrapbook- 2000- Girls 4th in State- Part 3

The Streaks finished the regular season 29-1 and ranked #2 in Illinois. Galesburg was 9-1 in the WB6, taking first place. They won the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tourney, the Grand Championship of the Bloomington Christmas Tourney, and the Galesburg MLK Tourney.

At this time the IHSA had coaches seed the entire Regional/Sectional Complex. Galesburg was seeded #1 by the coaches, so they received a first round bye and then hosted the winner of the #8/9 games- LaSalle-Peru for the Regional Championship. LP was coached by Luke Yaklich, who went onto to be a men’s assistant at Illinois State, Michigan, and Texas before becoming the head coach at Illinois- Chicago.

Friday Fotos- Girls State 1998- Kent Kriegshauser

One of the greatest compliments we can give to someone is to say they have gone above and beyond what we expected.

The Streaks girls basketball team had gone to State in 1996, 1997, and again in 1998. Kent Kriegshauser was one of those photographers that was always looking to do something new, and to capture the action in a new way.

When he explained to me what he had done, all i could say was,”What!?!?”

History- Resources- Illinois Basketball History

Here are a couple great resources to look at the history of Illinois basketball. If you are a high school basketball fan, you can literally spend hours with the information they have.

X/O’s- Backscreen by Point Guard

Megan Pacheco was a 5’9” All-State guard who played for the Streaks from 1996-2000. She had the ability to defend 1-5, shoot the three, handle the ball vs pressure, and post up inside. During her career, Galesburg finished 4th in State, Elite 8, 2nd in State, and 4th in State.

Jaque Howard was the All-State point guard on the team. Jaque was one of the all-time best three point shooters for Galesburg. In 2000, she made 74-154 on threes for 48%.

Sarah Pacheco was a 6’0” post who could shoot threes.

This play was set up to take advantage of these three players. In particular, we wanted to either get a lob to our bigger guard or a three for our point guard.

Streaks Scrapbook- New Coaches: Whiz Kid, Thiel, and Jerry Leggett

Replacing the “Legend”

Gerald Phillips became the coach of the Streaks in 1929. Between the start of GHS basketball in 1903 and Phillips in 1929, there had been 17 coaches. In part, that was due to fact that the first seven coaches were GHS students who only coached one year.

Phillips was the longest tenured boys basketball coach in GHS history, coaching 21 season. In his 21 seasons, he became a Galesburg legend. The Streaks won 332 games, 67% of their games, 16 Regional Championships, 7 trips to State, and one 2nd place finish.

As we know, it is always tough to be the “man to follow the man.” Probably no hire in GHS history brought more glitz and must certainly have “won the press conference,” that the hire of Ken Menke. If the administration wanted to hire a name, they sure did it with Ken Menke.

Streaks Scrapbook- Albert & Elbert Kimbrough Fieldhouse

They have started to redecorate the Kimbrough Fieldhouse. They have signage on the east side and now on the entrance. They will be doing work on inside signage to celebrate their careers.

I think it looks fantastic, share your thoughts in the comments!!

Streaks Scrapbook- 2000 Girls 4th in State- Part 2

The Streaks returned four starters from the 1999 team that finished second in State. But Galesburg was quickly hit with adversity, Megan Pacheco was out to start the season with a foot injury. Megan would miss the first 12 games of the season.

At the start of the season, the Streaks started Jaque Howard as point guard, Michelle Flaar as a wing, Rachel Bicego and Shanell Jackson played the other wing, Whitney Snyder and Sarah Pacheco started as posts with Ashley Shepherd first in as a sub.

Legends- 1964 Williamsfield & Bob Anderson

The 1964 Williamsfield basketball team had quite a season. The Bombers went 23-6 on the season and won both the District and the Regional Tourneys. The Bombers were led by a junior guard, Bob Anderson. Anderson averaged 26.8ppg.

X/O’s- Guard Posted Up

Megan Pacheco was a 5’9”, All-State guard for us from 1996 thru 2000. She was a coaches dream, she could defend 1-5, shoot from perimeter, and be physical in the post.

We set up a play that we thought would both allow her to post up and to shoot the three.

In 2000, our players were: #1 Jaque Howard, #2 Michelle Flaar, #3 Megan Pacheco, #4 Whitney Snyder, #5 Sarah Pacheco.

Streaks Scrapbook- 2000 Girls 4th in State- Part 1

From the start of the season, thru the regular season, thru the post season, and even today, the 2000 Streaks may have been and are still one of the most overlooked Streaks teams. After a tremendous run by the Streaks from 1995 thru 1999, many fans and many opponents felt like this might be a “down” year.

Obviously it was not a “down” year for the Streaks. In 2000, the Streaks went 34-4, won the WB6, ranked #2 in Illinois, and finished 4th in State.

To understand the 2000 team, we have to go back and look at the build up and the development of the core players.

Build Up To 2000

1997- 33-2, WB6-1st, State Rank-#2, State Finish-4th

Starters
- Molly Watson (19.5ppg), Melanie Pendergrass 11.0ppg), Jessica Thompson (7.5ppg), Sarah Larson (9.4ppg), Angie Galyean (7.0ppg)

Top Subs- Meg Sherwood (3.0ppg), Megan Pacheco (Fr-6.3ppg), Danielle Murfin

Tourney Team-  Leslie Gumm, Jaque Howard Fr, Michelle Flaar Fr, Whitney Snyder Fr, Jenny Zolper, Katie McCants.

Games Played- Megan Pacheco 35, Jaque Howard 25, Michelle Flaar 23, Whitney Snyder 21.

1998- 27-6, WB6-2nd, State Rank-#14, State Finish-Elite 8

Starters
- Sarah Larson (19.9ppg), Megan Pacheco (So- 15.9ppg), Jaque Howard (So- 7.9ppg), Michelle Flaar (So- 5.6ppg), Jenny Zolper (6.2ppg)

Top Subs- Whitney Snyder (So- 3.8ppg), Sarah Pacheco (Fr- 3.6ppg), Rachel Bicego (Fr- 2.2ppg), Ashley Shepherd (Fr- 3.2ppg)

Tourney Team-  Katie McGunnigal, Hilary Hennefent, Stacy Boettcher So, Mary Lindstrom So, Michelle Mundy So, Kimi Peck So.

Games Played- Megan Pacheco 33, Jaque Howard 33, Michelle Flaar 33, Whitney Snyder 33. Rachel Bicego 27, Stacy Boettcher 13, Mary Lindstrom 5, Sarah Pacheco 11, Kimi Peck 13, Ashley Shepherd 13, Michelle Mundy 6.

1999- 33-2, WB6-1st, State Rank-#2, State Finish-2nd

Starters
- Sarah Larson (22.6ppg), Megan Pacheco (Jr- 11.9ppg), Jaque Howard (Jr- 8.3ppg), Whitney Snyder (Jr- 8.6ppg), Michelle Flaar (Jr- 3.6ppg)

Top Subs- Sarah Pacheco (So- 4.5ppg), Rachel Bicego (So- 4.4ppg), Jenny Zolper (2.4ppg)

Tourney Team-  Shannon Williams Fr, Mary Lindstrom Jr, Katie McGunningal, Stacy Boettcher Jr, Shanell Jackson So, Kimi Peck Jr, Ashley Shepherd So, Michelle Mundy Jr

Games Played- Megan Pacheco 34, Jaque Howard 35, Michelle Flaar 35, Whitney Snyder 35, Rachel Bicego 35, Sarah Pacheco 34, Mary Lindstrom 25, Stacy Boettcher 24, Shannon Williams 10, Shanell Jackson 14, Kimi Peck 23, Michelle Mundy 20

The “Stars” Were Gone
So headed into the 2000 season, there was no Molly Watson or Sarah Larson to lead the Streaks. Both of them had scored around 20ppg, been first team All-Conference, and first team All-State.

It was easy to think that maybe something would be missing with the 2000 team.

Wealth of Experience
Megan Pacheco- 1 yr Regular, 2 Yr Starter, 102 varsity games
Jaque Howard- 2 yr Starter, 93 varsity games
Michelle Flaar- 2 yr Starter, 91 varsity games
Whitney Snyder- 1 yr Regular, 1 Yr Starter, 89 varsity games
Rachel Bicego- 2 yr Regular, 62 varsity games
Sarah Pacheco- 2 yr Regular, 45 varsity games
Ashley Shepherd- 27 varsity game
Kimi Peck— 36 varsity games
Stacy Boettcher- 37 varsity games
Mary Lindstrom- 30 varsity games
Shanell Jackson- 14 varsity games
Michelle Mundy- 26 varsity games

No Silver Streaks girls basketball team has entered a season with more varsity game experience than the 2000 team, and definitely no team has entered a season with more IHSA tourney experience than this group.

The core of seniors- Jaque Howard, Michelle Flaar, Megan Pacheco, and Whitney Snyder had been regulars on 2 or 3 teams who had gone to State. They had been on the varsity all three years as the Streaks went a combined 93-10. Each year, they had played 2-3 weeks longer and 5-6 more games than most players.

Jaque Howard, Michelle Flaar, Megan Pacheco, and Whitney Snyder had all started in the IHSA State Championship game the year before.

The Challenge
2000 was set up to be the toughest schedule the Streaks had ever faced. The schedule was tougher partly out of design, we wanted to play more and more Chicago schools because we felt that was who we would have to beat to succeed at State.

The schedule was tougher also because our success over the previous 5 years made it much tougher to find games. The only downstate teams who would play us were the best teams in the Peoria area. The only teams in Chicago who would play us were teams with very serious programs. The Bloomington tourney wanted to be the best in Illinois, so they brought in very good teams like Chicago Washington, Quincy Notre Dame.

We knew entering the season that we would be playing highly ranked teams like Peoria High, Maine South, Barrington, and Peoria ND.

As it turned out, the 2000 regular season would have 20 games vs State ranked or State mentioned teams.

X/O’s- Warriors Go To Play

Golden State initiates their favorite play with ball somewhere in the wing area. They have the ball at the wing area, two players at the top on the ball side, and two offensive players on the helpside.

If there are two shooters on the weakside, they space on the arc. If it is a non-shooter, they go to the dunker spot.

Legends- 1961 Collinsville- Undefeated State Champs

There are many great teams in Illinois HS basketball ball history. It is impossible to determine which team was the greatest team. For basketball fans, it is fun to look back and to debate.

In 1961, Collinsville went a perfect 32-0 with legendary Coach Vergil Fletcher. Their top two players were Bogie Redman and Fred Riddle.

Streaks Scrapbook- Basketball Coaches Quiz

This Spring Galesburg HS will be looking for their 34th boys basketball coach. This coach will be the 13th coach since John Thiel left in 1973.

Reflections- Allen & NCAA Tourney (2022)

I was looking back thru some old clippings and came across an interview with Allen after Longwood had earned an NCAA Tourney spot. It was an exciting time. The NCAA thoughtfully sent Longwood to play in Indianapolis so Amy and I could attend.

We stayed at the team hotel in downtown Indianapolis. It was so much fun to see the excitement of the parents/families staying at the team hotel. The players were royalty when they went thru the lobby for the team bus. There was a police escort for the bus to take them anywhere they were going.

Streaks Scrapbook- Phil Theobald at State- 1968, 1997, 2001

Phil Theobald was a 1959 graduate of Galesburg High School. In 1959, the Streaks were coached by John Thiel. That year the Streaks were #1 in State for most of the year before finishing 3rd in State. Phil Theobald grew up a Silver Streak, when the Streaks were at the center of the Illinois basketball world.

He became famous as sports writer, first with the Galesburg Register but for most of his career at the Peoria Journal Star. For those of you who have watched YouTube version of the famous 1976 Galesburg vs Richwoods Regional game, Phil was the man they interviewed on the broadcast.

I have included in this post, three examples where his Streaks roots came out in his work.

X/O’s- 4 Possessions That Helped Florida Win

Anyone who watched Florida’s win in the National Championship game would quickly say that Florida’s defense won the championship. I don’t think it would be wrong to say that. The saying goes,”Defense wins championships.”

I felt there was one coaching decision and 4 offensive possessions that were critical in helping Florida win the championship.

Friday Fotos- 1998 Boys State- Kent Kriegshauser

This is a picture taken by Kent Kriegshauser in 1998. The Silver Streaks weren’t just good, they were great. They finished the season 30-3 on their way to a 2nd place finish in the State Tourney.

In the photo are Mark Reed (assistant coach), Mike Miller (head coach), and Brian Kern (assistant coach). Mark was a highly successful athlete at GHS and Monmouth College. Mike Miller came to Galesburg after taking Rockford Guilford to a 2nd in State finish. Brian Kern was just coming off a successful basketball career at Illinois State University.

Inside Hoops- Paige Bueckers Is Great But…

UConn had a tremendous run to the NCAA Championship. Such things are debatable but I am not sure any team has ever been so dominate in the Final Four. UConn clearly was the best team in America!!

Paige Bueckers was the star of UConn and is one of the all-time most exciting college players. She will enter any debate on best all-time college players. And she is projected to be the #1 draft pick in the WNBA draft, which will be in on Monday, April 14.

Bueckers is great but Sara Strong is the player that really impressed me. Strong is a 6’2” freshman. I am not saying Strong is better than Bueckers but it is a question to revisit in few years.

Streaks Scrapbook- 1960’s- The Glory Days by Jay Redfern (1988)

On March 19, 1988, Jay Redfern wrote three articles looking at Silver Streaks basketball in the 1960’s, and the fifteen years since John Thiel coached.

To give you background, Galesburg basketball from 1956 thru 1970 had won 79% of their games, and had gone to State 8 times during this period. By the mid-‘60’s, people were complaining about why the GHS Gym had been built so small.

By 1988, Galesburg had gone 13 years without a State appearance. Previously the Streaks longest drought had been 10 years from 1921-1931.

In the articles, Jay interviews- Barry Swanson, John Thiel, Ralph Cannon, Frank Dexter, Dale Kelley, Dave Wood, Jim Reinebach, Dave Peck, Jimmie Carr, Chuck Bednar, Lyle Snyder, and David Gunderson.

The three articles are:

Inside Hoops- Jon Scheyer- Sit or Stand on Sideline?

Today most coaches stand on the sideline the entire game. They feel standing allows them freedom to move up and down the sideline to yell instructions. I am sure they feel their activity as a coach can help them “energize” their players, and make it more likely that as coaches they are heard.

A major problem if the head coach stands the entire time on the sideline, they often shut their assistants out of the game. An assistant may see something but not be able to really share it until a time out, then they have about 15 seconds to express their thought before the head coach needs to go into the huddle.
