Slappin’ Glass Podcast produced another great one with Kellen Sampson, assistant coach for the Houston Cougars. Their questions and his responses make it a must listen to podcast. Some highlights of the podcast—
UNSCRIPTED POINTS
Houston’s Focus is to win “the unscripted points.” This means winning in three areas-
1- Offensive rebounds
2- Producing turnovers and fastbreak
3- Rebounding and fast breaks.
All three of these areas involve winning the battle of energy.
PUT IN DEFENSIVE DISRUPTORS
Defensive disruptors are actions which are going to blow up another teams schemes. Put in things like hard switches and traps vs ball screens. Put in trapping posts and rotating out of it.
FOUR MUSTS IN THEIR SUMMER PRACTICES
1- Put in schemes to defend ball screens and handoffs
2- Put in schemes to double posts.
3- Put in Shell defense
4- Develop transition defense
FOCUS ON OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING
1- They always send 3 to the offensive boards.
2- They chart “goes”- which means every time the player goes to the offensive boards.
3- Running to the back of the person blocking out is not a “go.” Offensive rebounders should always be going at one of the shoulders of the defender.
4- #2 guard goes to elbow / ft line area for long rebounds.
5- Point guard goes back as defender, point guard must take away layups first.
6- Best transition is offensive rebounds. When they send 3 to the offensive boards, The defense better send 4 to block out.
7- In transition, never buddy run. Get ahead then defend.
8- Once sure there is no rim runner uncovered, the point guard must get out to guard best three point shooters.
The last concept that Sampson covered was how to play two posts who are not perimeter shooters, which is a relevant topic for high school coaches.
