What impressed you about Coach Demott in her first season?
One thing that impressed me about Lexi this year was her determination and mindset all season. No matter what the situation was, winning or losing, at practice or during a game, she always kept the same energy and never gave up on the girls. Another thing she was good at was building relationships with the girls. That made it easy for them to have confidence in the team and want to work their hardest.
How would you describe your first season coaching HS basketball?
This being my first year coaching high school there were a lot of takeaways from the season. With recently graduating myself, it opened my eyes to the adversity coaches have to overcome throughout the season. One of those being attendance and commitment to the sport. Overall, the season may have not gone the way we wanted, due to cancellations, and not playing as many games as we would’ve liked. But I enjoyed having the opportunity to work with this group of girls again and watching the growth and improvement over the season.
Coach Noonan
You have been around a lot of coaches thru the years. What was your impression of Coach Demott’s first year as head coach?
Coach Demott has a tremendous work ethic. Whether it be scheduling, scouting or practice planning, she is a tireless worker who is always looking for a way to make things better for the team. Taking over a program of this caliber is difficult, and requires a person to have a high level of fortitude; she made it look easy. In team sports, culture trumps everything. Coach Demott understands this and goes above and beyond to make being a member of the Silver Streaks a meaningful experience for everyone involved. She’s going to have a very successful career at Galesburg.
What was your feeling about the 2024-5 season and the team?
You have had an opportunity to work with several different coaches at both the college and the high school levels. Going in you knew who Lexi was, but you probably didn’t really know what kind of coach she was going to be. What was your impression of Lexi in her first year as a head coach?
Lexi's maturity, confidence and her decisiveness stuck out to me right away. I've been around a number of coaches over the years and it's not uncommon to see them second guess themselves or even waver under tough circumstances, especially younger coaches. Lexi being only 26/27 years old and having that confidence in herself and what she's doing isn't normal in my experience.
Additionally, Lexi is very open to input, discussion and ultimately the implementation of what others have shared. There's no doubt that she's steering the ship but she has enough awareness to know it can't be done alone. I've been very fortunate to be a part of highly successful organizations over the years (basketball and business worlds) and from what I've experienced first-hand, this collaboration is incredibly rewarding and leads to much greater success.
I was very impressed with Lexi all season long and I'm certain she will continue to get even better as she gets more experience in the coming years. Galesburg High School and the community is very fortunate to have her leading the women's basketball program
. The past season's team was full of really good kids! The entire group was fun and easy to be around all season - many jokes, laughs and smiles!
All of the kids bought into what Lexi was saying and everyone was going in the same direction all season. There really wasn't any conflict or issues outside of basketball. Unfortunately, I've been a part of teams in the past that had challenges outside of basketball and those things always negatively impact the season.
One of the things that can't be overlooked is the age of this season's team. There were many young or inexperienced kids that were asked to do a lot and everyone met the challenge. It's very impressive that this group was able to have such a successful season!
You have been involved in administration for years, but this was your first year as GHS Athletic Director, and it was Lexi’s first year as Varsity Head Coach. What are some your impressions about this first year?
I’m lucky that I get the “behind the scenes” perspective of Lexi and all of our coaches. I get to see things most don’t. What’s impressive regarding Lexi is as a first year coach she has veteran coaching tendencies. Her organization, program management, and relationships with her players and staff are outstanding. Her mindset stands out. She’s not fixed in anything she does and prepares with the belief her team can be better than the last time they took the court.
